Chains vs Roots: How to be motivated to love what you hate doing

I was journaling today about my issues with commitment. Namely looking at where I feel I fail at commitment/consistency and where it feels natural and expansive. In other words, my chains and my roots.

With chains, we feel tied down, trapped, it creates the need to break free, to desire escape. We cannot wait to be rid of it.

Roots, on the other hand, feed us. Both have the same job of connecting us to a specific spot, a something. Yet with roots, we are alive. If we were to break our roots, to stop doing the something, it would pain us.

Unfortunately, sometimes the chains are something we need, either to have or do or be.

I have good news. Chains can become roots. Roots can also become chains, but lets focus on the former right now.

Our chains and roots will all be different and unique. So a simple way of recognising what’s what, and how to transfigure those chains into roots is:

  1. Think about what you feel is a weakness, a task you (feel you) hate doing, but needs your attention.
  1. Extract the core action that #1 needs from you.
  1. Where in your life are you already doing #2 naturally, without effort, almost automatically.
  1. What is the key difference between #1 and #3, what makes #2 easier/harder in them
  1. How can you reconsider your perception around #1 to add in #4.

Okay okay. I know that might not make a lot of sense, so I’ll give my example.

1 — I hate posting to social and blogging regularly, be it daily, committing to weekly or even monthly. It feels gross to have that expectation.

2 —It’s the commitment, the regularity.

3 — As a student of Tabwoo Institute of Magic and Mastery I study daily, and attend the weekly calls. I also commit to time with my daughter daily.

4 — Tabwoo and my daughter give back. As in, it’s a two way stream of connection. My social accounts and this blog are young and without following. They are merely media, and not social. They don’t provide me my sustenance needed for motivation. That fuel of connection that provides my purpose.

5 — To make myself want to commit and show up regularly on these channels, I could reuse my content in high engagement forums and groups. Thus building my personal audience for my business and getting the engagement that fuels me in the meantime.

What are your chains and where can you turn them into roots?
