They’re Not Waiting for Your Explanation
Sometimes people don’t misunderstand you because you said something wrong.

They misunderstand you because changing their mind would mean changing the story they’ve already written about you.
I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of energy replaying conversations in my head.
Not because I wanted to win anything.
I genuinely believed if I could explain myself one more time, they’d finally get it.
Maybe I used the wrong words.
Maybe I talked too fast.
Maybe I left out some detail that would’ve made it click.
So I’d send one more text.
One more voice note.
One more paragraph.
Convinced this was the one that would land.
It almost never did.
Here’s the thing about people that took me way too long to figure out.
We assume misunderstandings happen because someone’s missing information.
But a lot of the time, they have all the information.
They’ve just already decided which version of you is easier to believe.
I used to take that personally.
Now I just think it’s human nature.
We all build little folders for each other.
The reliable one.
The difficult one.
The emotional one.
The people pleaser.
Once you get filed somewhere, every new version of you has to fight the old one just to get a hearing.
That’s exhausting, and I know because I did it.
I apologized for things that didn’t need an apology.
Over-explained why I couldn’t make plans.
Why I needed space.
Why I changed my mind.
Why I wasn’t the same person I was a year ago.
Then one day it hit me.
The people who actually loved me never asked for a closing argument.
They just asked if I was okay.
That was the whole bar.
So now when someone’s already decided who I am before they’ve even asked a real question, I don’t spiral.
I’m not building a PowerPoint in my head.
I’m not rehearsing my defense in the shower.
Because here’s the part nobody warns you about.
Some people aren’t looking for clarity.
They’re looking for consistency.
If they’ve always seen you as too much, your confidence reads as arrogance.
If they’ve always seen you as quiet, your honesty reads as aggressive.
If they’ve always counted on you saying yes, your boundaries feel like a personal attack.
None of that means you’re wrong.
It just means you grew somewhere they weren’t expecting.
And honestly, that’s allowed.
These days I save my energy for people who ask before they assume.
The ones who get curious instead of defensive.
Who can just say, “that doesn’t sound like you, what happened?”
That’s rare.
If you have it, hold onto it.
Everyone else can keep whatever version of you they need.
You don’t have to carry it for them anymore.
Because peace doesn’t always show up the day everyone finally understands you.
Sometimes it shows up the day you realize they don’t have to.
