Israel just shared new intelligence with the US indicating Iran was plotting to assassinate Trump.

In retrospect the timing makes sense. He was reacting to something real that hadn’t been made public yet.

The plane swap

Trump has a new $400 million presidential jet — the one gifted by Qatar, which entered service July 1st. He’s been openly proud of it, calling it magnificent.

When he left the NATO summit in Turkey, he didn’t fly home on it.

He switched back to the older Air Force One.

According to four US officials, this wasn’t a scheduling issue. Two sources told CNN the newer plane didn’t have the same security capabilities to guarantee safety in that international setting.

You don’t normally bring a backup jet along just in case. The fact that this swap happened suggests the Secret Service had genuine concerns before this trip even started — concerns that predate the specific intelligence Israel shared this week.

The funeral banners

At the funeral for Iran’s former Supreme Leader this week, banners were visible reading “We will kill Trump.” Smaller signs in the crowd read “Kill Trump.”

This wasn’t subtle or coded. It was explicit, public, and photographed.

What the WSJ reporter could confirm

Israel and the US have been in extremely close, frequent contact throughout this war — late-night phone calls between leadership, shared intelligence on targets, unprecedented military cooperation. Israeli officials have reportedly been present in US situation rooms.

That relationship recently soured. But the intelligence sharing on this specific threat happened recently and appears to explain Trump’s statements from the day before.

The reporter couldn’t confirm specifics — no details yet on method, timeline, or how far the plotting had progressed. Also couldn’t confirm whether it was connected to the incident where reporters aboard the old Air Force One were reportedly told to close their window shades — something Trump said he hadn’t personally been informed about by Secret Service.

The deeper context — why this isn’t new for Trump

According to reporting from Jonathan Swan and Maggie Haberman, Trump’s fixation on Iranian threats intensified significantly during the period he was out of office between his two terms.

He was briefed by the FBI that Iran was actively trying to kill him. Iran hacked into campaign staffer Susie Wiles’s emails during that period. There was a persistent atmosphere of threat around his campaign travel — plane switches happened even then.

Advisers close to him believe part of the reason his second-term presidency involves significantly less travel than his first is a genuine, unstated fear of assassination. Not something Trump would ever say directly — he’d view acknowledging that fear as weakness. But it appears to shape his decisions.

His targeting by Iran traces back specifically to his decision to order the strike on General Qasem Soleimani during his first term. That decision is part of why he sits at the top of Iran’s list now.

What this means for the war going forward

Trump’s options from here are genuinely limited absent a decision to massively escalate.

US munitions are reportedly depleted after the recent conflict.

A ground invasion is something advisers believe he’d only consider as an absolute last resort.
