When a Checklist Met a Heart: My Biggest Lesson at Amal

You know, looking back at my Amal Fellowship journey, I entered the program with a very specific mindset. Since I study business and love entrepreneurship, I was used to working fast and focusing entirely on results.

So, when I became the leader for our Mega Project, Baserafy, which we started to help students find housing in Lahore, I immediately went into full “work mode.” I had a great team with me: Mahnoor leading our marketing, Haseeb on business development, Fatima managing finance, Mahnoor Imtiaz handling operations, Arooj on customer services, and Mehwish taking care of creative media. Because I was the project lead, I felt this massive responsibility. I completely focused on the strategy, setting up the website, and pushing everyone to hit targets. To me, being a leader just meant getting things done quickly.

But a few weeks in, something happened that made me stop and completely change the way I think.

We were in a session talking about our project progress. Before this day, my focus was always on checklists and goals. I wanted Mahnoor to get more growth, Haseeb to lock down partnerships, and Mehwish to pump out designs. But during this specific discussion, the conversation suddenly shifted. It stopped being about the work and became entirely about the people.

A few of my team members opened up and became really honest. They shared how tired and stressed they actually were. They were struggling to balance their heavy university classes, personal lives, and the big pressure of building Baserafy from scratch. It turned into a very emotional conversation about the fear of failing and feeling burned out.

Sitting there and listening to them hit me really hard. I looked at myself and realized that because I wanted our project to succeed so badly, I was treating it like a big, heartless to-do list. Seeing my team be that honest made me realize that leadership is not just about pushing a project to the finish line. It is about taking care of the people who are working hard alongside you. Baserafy cannot be a true success if the team feels unheard or overwhelmed. I learned that day that good leadership needs deep empathy, not just hard work.

Honestly, I only realized this because of the amazing energy of the people around me. The environment at Amal creates a safe space where you can be honest about your struggles without being judged. Seeing my batch mates show such pure honesty and support changed everything. It wasn’t about aggressive corporate drive; it was a beautiful kind of group strength. It showed me that when people feel safe and supported, they care much more about the goal.

Looking back, if I could start the project all over again, I would do things completely differently. I would put people first and work second. Instead of rushing into timelines and task sheets, I would spend the first few meetings just getting to know Mahnoor, Haseeb, Fatima, Mahnoor Imtiaz, Arooj, and Mehwish on a personal level, understanding their lives and how they like to work. I would create regular moments just to ask everyone, “How are you doing mentally and emotionally?” so nobody has to carry the stress in silence. I would still push for good results, but I would be much gentler and more understanding as a leader.

In the end, Amal taught me a huge lesson. The most valuable part of any project isn’t the technology, the website, or the product; it is always the hearts of the people standing right next to you.
