The 4 Programming Languages You Should Ditch According to Latest Popularity Trends: Say Goodbye to Obsolete Ones

As a matter of fact, there are a lot of articles and videos online that advise which programming languages you should learn, but there are no accurate articles or videos to guide you which programming languages to avoid learning. You may learn the wrong programming language, but there will be a lot of damage in the process, and you will end up demotivated, unproductive, and, at worst, jobless even after learning a programming language. This means that even if you master a programming language but the chosen programming language is the wrong programming language, you’ve been wasting your whole time learning that programming language.

So in this article, we are going to assume 4 programming languages that might not give you a good return for your time; moreover, in the last part of this article, I will suggest a few programming languages that are high-demanding and have long-term benefits.

1. C++

C++ is a programming language that is the foundation of every college or university. Now, before you judge me, let me explain: every programming language has its own advantages and situations that make it essential to learn them. I’ll cover all those specific case for all the programming languages, including C++, in a moment. But first, you need to know why some people recommend learning C++ as the first language to learn. There are some arguments that say, “You should learn C++ to know how a computer functions.”, They are right in some points because C++ does offer some low-level capabilities like memory management, etc., but this argument has no differentiation from saying, “You need to know how the engine works in order to be able to drive.”, Certainly, there are some advantages to knowing how the engine of a car works in case your car breaks down, you see, this is not a requirement for being able to drive a car though.

From my personal standpoint, I can say that C++ has unnecessary complexity and is much harder to learn and master than any other programming languages. With this in mind, I would not recommend C++ as your first programming language. But there are circumstances in which you might want to learn C++. If you want to do game development using Unreal Engine, then you should C++, which is faster than any other existing programming language. But if you are not that particular person, and you want to make fast progress, elude C++.

2. C

We already know that C is the mother of all programming languages, as all modern languages like C++, Java, Python, and JavaScript are all based on C. In fact, the first programming language I learned when I started my programming journey was C. Yet, I won’t make a single comment to describe C because it hardly had any impact on my programming journey because C is a low-level programming language used for system applications. This means that unlike other programming languages that are in high demand, C is not an object-oriented programming language. There are some jobs available that require C; these would include operating system and embedded systems-related jobs that are not in demand, so I would avoid choosing C as my first language.

3. PHP

In third place, we have the most popular programming language, PHP. There are some reasons why choosing PHP as your first language can be a poor decision:

• There are much better alternatives available now, like Node.js and Python.
• The popularity of PHP is dwindling quickly, gradually.

There are many websites that use PHP as their programming language. One of the reasons for this is that PHP is used by content management systems like WordPress, and millions of people who don’t know how to code use WordPress to build their own websites, which as a result increases the popularity and usage of PHP. If you look at the graph below, which shows the popularity and usage of PHP are declining over time:

Most of the companies that use PHP in their backend are from the early 2000s, and I don’t see any reason why a company would start out now and use PHP as their backend programming language. The image below depicts all the companies that use PHP in the backend:

4. SQL

There are a few reasons not to choose SQL as your first programming language. SQL is not a general-purpose programming language; it is only used for creating, reading, updating, and deleting the data stored in databases. That is why there is nothing that you can build just using SQL. As a beginner, you won’t be working with databases right away, so learn a general-purpose programming language first, and then when you need to hook up a database to your website, you can learn SQL.
