FACT-HECK: Does drinking large amounts of water cure malaria without medication?
Context:
In many communities across Northern Nigeria, including parts of Katsina State, it is commonly believed that drinking plenty of water alone can cure malaria. Some people delay visiting health facilities or taking prescribed antimalarial medicines because they believe hydration is sufficient treatment.
This belief often influences treatment decisions, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare may be limited. Delayed diagnosis and treatment can increase the risk of severe illness and complications.
Claim:
Does drinking large amounts of water cure malaria without medication?
Verification:
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Malaria Fact Sheet, malaria remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in many African countries, including Nigeria.
Medical experts explain that drinking water is important for preventing dehydration, especially when a person has a fever, vomiting, or excessive sweating. However, water does not kill the malaria parasite responsible for the infection.
The WHO recommends prompt diagnosis using malaria testing and treatment with approved antimalarial medicines. These medicines are specifically designed to eliminate the parasite from the body.
Similarly, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) advises individuals with symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, body weakness, and vomiting to seek proper medical evaluation and treatment.
Healthcare professionals warn that relying solely on water intake or home remedies may allow the infection to worsen. Untreated malaria can progress to severe malaria, which may cause anaemia, organ failure, seizures, coma, or death.
The United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also states that malaria requires appropriate antimalarial medication for effective treatment and that supportive measures such as hydration alone are not sufficient.
Verdict: FALSE
The claim that drinking large amounts of water can cure malaria without medication is false. While adequate hydration helps prevent dehydration and supports recovery, it does not eliminate the malaria parasite. Effective malaria treatment requires proper diagnosis and approved antimalarial medicines prescribed by qualified healthcare professionals.
