Comment Sections Are The New Market Research!

People Call It Engagement. I Think It’s Research.

I have a theory.

If you want to know what people think, stop asking them directly.

Read the comments.

Somewhere between people fighting over coffee orders, defending brands they’ve never worked for, and writing full essays under random videos, comment sections quietly became one of the most honest places on the internet.

Because people don’t always tell the truth when they know they’re being researched.

But they reveal a lot when they think they’re just reacting.

What annoys them. What they secretly want. What feels overpriced. What confused them. What made them stay.

And lately, I realised something else.

Comment sections aren’t just becoming market research. They’re becoming decision-making tools.

Want to buy something? Open comments.

Want to know if a show is worth watching? Open comments.

Trying to understand a company, theory, movie ending, skincare product, café, trend, app update, or whether people actually liked something? Open comments.

At this point, reviews feel formal. Comments feel honest.

Sometimes the comments answer questions I didn’t even know I had.

Someone has already asked: “Does this actually work?” “Is this overhyped?” “Who is this even for?” “Am I missing something?”

And usually somebody else has already answered.

Not always correctly.

But often more honestly.

A comment section is basically a focus group that forgot it was being observed.

And the funny part is, it’s not just useful for brands.

It tells you what people care about.

What makes them trust. What makes them click away. What makes them stay long enough to type.

Sometimes I open comments for context.

Sometimes I realise the comments became the content.

Maybe that’s why we keep scrolling.

Because we want experiences, reactions, and little pieces of human context before deciding what we think.
