RED HEARTS?
Why Your Nose Goes Pink When He Smiles…
Achoo!
OMG, I’m blushing again!
But I just can’t help it? He just looks so cute! And he’s staring at me!
Well, it so happens that his smile is not the sole reason for that redness that creeps up your cheeks. Your body is tailored to show off those interesting indicators!
So why do we blush?
Calm down, okay? Let’s find out now…

From the bio-experts…
When our science teachers said our brain controls all our actions, I bet it didn’t come to your mind that it could be disrupting our romantic life too, right? Well, it does!
So, what’s really happening behind that rosy glow?
Blushing actually starts from the brain. It begins in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and insula, these are brain regions connected with emotions, self-awareness and social attention.
So those moments when you feel exposed (like that day your crush smiled at you), praised, embarrassed or just noticed in a way that matters to you, these areas are active.
Once this ACC detects a socially relevant moment, it signals your hypothalamus (remember the big guy?), which activates the sympathetic nervous system, this then causes the release of adrenaline.
You are definitely familiar with adrenaline, right?
Normally, this hormone increases heart rate, dilate airways and diverts blood to large muscles, so, what does it do after that nudge from your hypothalamus? It triggers vasolidation, that is, widening of the blood vessels in your face, neck and sometimes chest.
This causes more blood flow into these areas, and bingo! You get warmth and redness written all over you…
Before you ask, haha, “Isn’t adrenaline actually supposed to constrict blood vessels?”
Yes, you’re right. But that only occurs in most of your body. Our facial vessels have different receptors (called the beta-2 adrenergic receptors) that respond to adrenaline by relaxing and expanding.
Must be a reason why the face gets its own special set of creams!
Did you know?
Well, in all that claim that humans are higher animals, blushing is something else we get higher grades in!
Do you know that humans are the only species that blush?
Yep! no other animal turns pink from emotion. Charles Darwin even called it “the most peculiar and most human of all expressions.”
No room for fake love…
I know how much you could have been itching to ask the question, “why can’t we fake it?” or “why can’t we stop it?”
Blame that on your sympathetic nervous system!

Remember how we found out blushing works with self-awareness?
Well, here’s the kicker… you can’t even control it!
The more self-aware you are, the faster that redness creeps up your rosy cheeks. Guess what’s creepier? The moment you know you’re blushing, it gets worse!
So don’t go around thinking you can fake it, maybe some blush makeup would do, but nothing beats what your body knows how to do well…
Jessy says…
At the end of the day, blushing isn’t just about biology or embarrassment, it’s about being human. That sudden rush of color is your body’s way of saying, “Hey, I feel something real.” Whether it’s love, shyness, or just that awkward spotlight of attention, every blush is a tiny confession written across your cheeks.
So maybe red hearts aren’t just Valentine’s clichés, they’re living proof that our emotions run deeper than words. And honestly? That’s kind of beautiful.
So next time your face turns red, don’t fight it… science just wants everyone to know you’ve got a heart that feels.
Giddyap!
