Who Founded COCIN?

COCIN began through the work of the Sudan United Mission (SUM) British Branch which brought the gospel to parts of Northern Nigeria in the early 1900s.

The First Missionaries The first missionaries arrived in Wase, Plateau State on 8 October 1904.

They were:

Dr. Herman Karl Wilhelm Kumm

Dr. Ambrose H. Bateman

Mr. John Burt

Mr. John Lowry Maxwell

These missionaries are recognized as the founding fathers of the mission work that later became COCIN.

Expansion of the Mission Other missionary efforts followed:

Members of the Cambridge University Mission Party (CUMP) brought the gospel to:

Panyam in 1907, Kabwir in 1910 Later, the work of CUMP was handed over to the Sudan United Mission between 1930 and 1934.

Indigenous Leadership

The missionaries aimed to build a Nigerian-led church that could manage its own affairs. This goal was achieved in 1948, when the mission gave the Nigerian church the freedom to administer its affairs. Since then, the church has continued to grow under indigenous leadership.
