Does Gardyn Save You Money — or just Light Up Your Electric Bill?

Energy Costs: What You’ll Actually Pay

• According to specifications from Gardyn, the Home Kit uses about 47 kWh per month. At an average electricity rate (~$0.12/kWh), that’s roughly $6/month purely for power (Gardyn).
• Real user reports confirm that Gardyn increases electric bills by about $10–$15/month for older models, while the newer Gardyn 4.0 is about 20% more efficient, meaning lower energy usage (Reddit, Sypnotix).

What You Harvest — Valuation vs. Cost

• A typical estimate values the produce at about $39 per month (based on average prices for organic lettuce) (Digital Trends).
• I just started and had three pods not grow. Supposedly I can report it and get the money back, but I haven’t tried yet.

• Bottom line: After all costs, you’re gaining only about $4/month in savings — if Pelf isn’t included (Digital Trends).
• Of course this is if you eat the items you grow and normally buy them at the store

• We do have a greenhouse outside but it blew down once already and is not in the woods attached to a barn — so not much light and it’s mostly just a storage shed now.

Unless you’re generating your own yCubes or skipping membership, the financial payoff is minimal. If your goal is sustainability, freshness, or convenience in limited space — Gardyn may be worth it. But if you’re counting dollars, you’re probably not saving much, if anything.

We tend to throw a lot of veggies away when I buy them at the store. They go back and then I have to throw them out. I’m hoping Gardyn will help avoid that since I can harvest them at the time I’ll use them. Add to that I’m really anxious to see how the things like mini cauliflower turn out!
