The Way Things Are” Fallacy — Why Change Is Deserved

One of the most dangerous arguments in society is also one of the simplest:

“That’s just the way things are.”

Throughout history, people have used the status quo to justify inequality, oppression, discrimination, and injustice. But does the mere existence of a system make it morally right? Does tradition automatically deserve obedience?

In this philosophical article, I explore the fallacy of accepting reality simply because it already exists. Using examples ranging from bullying in schools to imperial domination — including a powerful speech from Code Geass — I examine how societies normalize harmful structures and why challenging them is essential for moral progress.

The article argues that: • The status quo is not self-justifying • Norms can become barriers to justice and liberty • Progress requires questioning flawed systems • Moral courage often begins with refusing passive acceptance

If humanity had always accepted “the way things are,” many injustices throughout history would never have been challenged.

True reform begins when people dare to imagine something better.
