Have you spent most of your life being told you feel too much?
That you are too emotional. Too affected. Too intense. That you take things too personally. That you need to toughen up, grow thicker skin, and stop letting everything get to you so deeply.
If that sounds familiar, this piece of my writing is for you.
Because here is what nobody told you: feeling deeply is not a flaw. It is not a weakness. It is not something that needs to be fixed.
It is a sign that you are an empath. And once you understand what that actually means, everything about your life starts to make a little more sense.
What Is an Empath, Really?
An empath is someone who does not just understand other people’s emotions — they actually feel them.
Not as an idea. Not as a concept. But as a physical, lived experience in their own body.
You walk into a room and immediately pick up on the tension in it. You sit next to a stranger on a bus and feel their sadness without knowing a single thing about them. A friend calls you upset, and by the end of the call, you are the one who needs to recover.
This is not imagination.
Research into mirror neurons — the brain cells that fire when we observe others feeling something — suggests that some people have significantly more active mirror neuron systems than others.
Empaths do not just see pain. They feel it as if it were their own.
That is both a profound gift and an enormous weight to carry — especially when no one has ever given you a name for it.
12 Signs You Are an Empath
Read through these slowly. Notice which ones stop you mid-sentence.
1. You absorb other people’s emotions without meaning to.
You do not choose to take on what someone else is feeling. It just happens. Their anxiety becomes your anxiety. Their sadness settles into your chest. Their joy lifts you without warning.
2. Crowded places leave you completely drained.
Shopping centres, parties, busy offices — what other people call “fun” often leaves you needing hours alone just to feel like yourself again. The noise is not just loud. The energy is overwhelming.
3. You always know when something is off.
Even when everyone is smiling and saying everything is fine, you know it is not. You feel the gap between what people say and what they actually mean. You have always been able to.
4. You are the person everyone comes to with their problems.
Strangers tell you their life story on trains. Friends call you first when everything falls apart. You have been the listener, the holder, the safe space — for as long as you can remember.
5. Conflict physically hurts you.
It is not just unpleasant. It lands in your body. Your chest tightens. Your stomach drops. Long after the argument is over, you are still carrying it.
6. Nature restores you in a way nothing else does.
When everything becomes too much, you go outside. A walk, a tree, a body of water — nature is not just nice for you. It is necessary. It resets something in you that nothing else can reach.
7. You struggle to watch violence or cruelty — even on screen.
News, documentaries, and certain films. You do not just feel bad watching them. You feel it. Days later, sometimes. The image stays. The emotion stays.
8. You feel other people’s physical pain.
Someone describes their headache, and yours starts. A friend breaks their ankle, and something aches in your leg. This is not sympathy. It is something closer to a shared body memory.
9. You need more alone time than almost everyone around you.
Not because you are antisocial. But because time alone is the only time you are not managing both your emotions and everyone else’s at the same time. It is the only time you are fully, quietly yourself.
10. You are deeply affected by the energy of spaces.
Some rooms feel heavy the moment you walk in. Some houses feel light. Some environments feel wrong in a way you cannot explain — and you are almost always right about them.
11. You give far more than you receive.
Not because people take advantage of you (though sometimes they do) — but because your instinct is always to feel what the other person needs and meet it. Receiving care, on the other hand, feels uncomfortable. Almost foreign.
12. You have always felt different. Like you see the world on a different frequency to everyone else.
Not better. Not worse. Just — different. Like you are picking up a channel nobody else can quite tune into. And for most of your life, that has felt lonely.
The Part Nobody Talks About
Being an empath without the right tools is exhausting.
When you do not know how to separate your emotions from others’, you live in a constant low-level state of overwhelm. Your nervous system never fully rests. You wake up tired. You go to bed still carrying the weight of everyone you encountered that day.
This is not who you are meant to be. This is what happens when a gift has no container.
The most important thing an empath can learn is not how to feel less. It is how to come back to themselves — consistently, deliberately, every single day.
Where to Start
If you recognise yourself in this list, the first step is simply this: stop treating your sensitivity as a problem to be managed.
Start treating it as something that needs tending. Like a garden. Like anything alive and real.
That means building a daily practice of returning to yourself. Clearing the energy you have absorbed. Resetting your emotional baseline before the day gets away from you.
If you do not know where to start with that, I made something for exactly this.
The Emotional Algorithm Reset is a practical guide designed for people who feel deeply and absorb constantly — and who need a structured way to process, release, and come back to themselves. It works through the emotional patterns that keep empaths stuck in overwhelm and gives you tools to change them.

And if you want to go even deeper — to understand not just your emotions but the energy patterns, wounds, and unconscious signals underneath them — the Shadow Work Prompts (40 Questions) is the companion piece.
Forty questions written specifically to help you see what you have been carrying that was never actually yours to begin with.

You were never too much.
You were never broken. You were never weak.
You were just feeling everything — in a world that had not yet learned to value the people who do.
Now you know what you are.
The next step is learning how to take care of it.
If this resonated, save it and share it with someone in your life who has always been told they feel too much. They need to read this.
