This Is Why “Heated Rivalry” Divides People

I keep seeing the hype around Heated Rivalry and similar “self-discovery” stories, and I’m gonna be honest:

Not because queer love is childish — but because the stakes are.

So much of mainstream gay media keeps centering the safest version of “struggle”: attractive, protected, usually white men navigating discomfort that’s ultimately survivable. A bruised ego. A tense family dinner. A career that wobbles but doesn’t collapse. It’s framed like the big battle is admitting who you are.

Meanwhile, a lot of marginalized queer people don’t get “self-discovery” arcs. We get survival math.

For Black and brown gays — especially in hyper-masculine environments — being known can mean losing housing, losing community, losing safety, losing access to protection, and sometimes risking real violence. The closet isn’t always shame. Sometimes it’s a bunker. Sometimes it’s strategy. Sometimes it’s the difference between getting home or not.

So when the culture treats these glossy coming-out stories like the gold standard of queer bravery, it doesn’t just feel disconnected. It feels insulting. Because it turns privilege into “courage,” and it turns everybody else’s lethal reality into a footnote.

I’m not saying people can’t enjoy a romance.

I’m saying don’t confuse entertainment with representation.

Some stories are escapism. Some stories are branding. And some stories are the real world — the part that doesn’t come with a soundtrack or a safe ending.

That’s where my attention is.

That’s where my disgust comes from.

And that’s what I’m going to keep naming, even politely.
