A Victim Of Ash Dieback Disease
This tree was photographed (by me) at Wakehurst Place in Sussex — home to the Millennium Seedbank. It is of an ash tree that has been devastated by a fungal infection known as Ash Dieback, which has been devastating ash trees across the country.
Ash trees represent 12% of all broadleaved trees in the UK, so their loss is very noticeable, with bare trunks and branches standing out among the greenery.
The UK lost virtually all its elm trees in the 1980s due to Dutch Elm Disease, and to lose another species would be a real tragedy. Work is being done to try to save the ash by identifying resistant specimens that can then serve as the progenitors of future fungus-tolerant ash trees.
At least this victim at Wakehurst Place can serve to raise a smile from the visitors.
