I Got Reads on Medium, Yet My Earnings Are $0
Here’s what I learnt!

Close to two hundred reads on my article. I was thrilled. Then I checked my earnings.
$0.10

That zero felt personal. Wasn’t this how Medium worked? You write, people read, money appears?
Turns out, I had it all wrong.
The Truth About Medium Earnings
Medium doesn’t pay for reads. It pays for read time from paying Medium Members.
Here’s what that means: You only earn when a paid subscriber reads your story and actually spends time on it. Not just clicks. Not just free readers using their monthly free articles. Paying members who engage with your content.
So my 200 reads? They could’ve been non-members, people who bounced after three seconds, or readers accessing my story for free. None of that earns money.
The Paywall Mistake
This one hurt. I published my first three articles without checking the “Meter this story” box. Even if paying members read them, I earned nothing because my stories weren’t behind the paywall.
That checkbox is everything. No paywall equals no earnings, regardless of who reads it.
The Member Reality
Here’s another wake-up call: most Medium readers aren’t paid members. Maybe 5–10% at best.
So even with 100 reads, only 5–10 might actually earn you money. And the amount depends on how long they read, not just that they clicked.
This is why someone with 50 engaged member-reads can earn more than someone with 500 random clicks.
What Changed for Me
After my zero-dollar lesson, I started doing things differently.
I always check the paywall box now. Always.
I focus on keeping readers engaged from the first sentence. More read time equals more earnings.
I write for real people, not algorithms. Genuine stories that people want to finish reading perform better than clickbait.
And I stopped checking my stats every hour. It was making me crazy and changing nothing.
The Bottom Line
If your earnings are zero, check these:
- Is the paywall enabled on your stories?
- Are you in the Medium Partner Program with payment setup complete?
- Are people actually reading your full articles or just clicking and leaving?
My latest article earned $2.60 from 307 reads (wow). Not life-changing, but it’s not zero.

Those reads still matter, even when they don’t pay. Every reader is a potential follower, someone who might share your work or become a fan later.
Keep writing. Check that paywall box. Focus on engagement over vanity metrics.
The money follows the quality.
Now, excuse me while I refresh my stats one more time.
