Writing Is Not Thought Itself

People often change the words they use depending on whom they are addressing, even when what they want to convey remains the same. When speaking to a specialist, they may use technical terminology; when speaking to someone unfamiliar with the field, they may explain through concrete examples. If time is limited, they may begin with the conclusion. If they want someone to understand the background as well, they may begin with the path that led there. The form of the explanation changes, but this does not mean that its underlying content has become something else.

If thought and writing were identical, then every change in wording or sequence would also produce a different thought. In practice, however, a single thought can be expressed in multiple ways. It can be stated briefly or explained at length. It can take the form of prose, a diagram, or spoken language. Yet the thought being expressed through these different forms may remain the same.

The reverse is also true. Different people may arrive at different understandings from the same text. One reader may discern the principle behind it, while another may receive it as a concrete example. One may infer assumptions that were never stated, while another takes in only what appears explicitly on the page. The same sequence of words does not necessarily give rise to the same thought in every reader.

Seen in this light, thought and writing cannot be entirely identical. Thought exists before it becomes writing, and a text is one expression selected from it. The text is then reconstructed as a different structure within the reader. Thought gives rise to writing, and writing gives rise to the reader’s understanding. At least two transformations take place between them.

When someone is preparing to speak, the content is not necessarily arranged in the mind as a sequence of sentences. There is first a configuration of meaning: what they want to convey, what matters within it, and how much of it needs to be communicated. Words are then selected according to the audience and the situation.

At this stage, several elements may already be present at once. The concepts to be conveyed, their background, causal relationships, concrete examples, and the purpose of the explanation may already stand in relation to one another before they become a sentence. Thought before writing is less like a line of words than a structure in which multiple elements are arranged.

When I think about a technical problem, I often see its background, objective, conditions, constraints, hypotheses, methods, results, and possible further developments as a more or less coherent set of relations. These elements do not necessarily appear in the order that prose requires. While considering a hypothesis, I may also see its possible result and its connection to another problem. Past experience may combine with present conditions, and from that relation a future possibility may emerge.

If thought is a multilayered, multidimensional structure that can contain several concepts, causal relationships, temporal frames, and perspectives at once, then writing converts that structure into a one-dimensional form in which words must be placed one after another.

Relationships that coexist in the mind must be divided into what comes first and what comes later on the page. One point of entry must be chosen from several possibilities, and a decision must be made about what to place at the center and what to move into the background. The words chosen for the opening of a text may shape the direction of everything that follows.

At that point, writing is already no longer identical to thought. Thought has not simply been moved outside the mind unchanged. It has been transformed into a form that writing can accommodate. Writing has a structure of its own, and the relationships within thought must be rearranged to fit it.

Of course, what exists before language does not always have a clearly defined structure. Sometimes there is only a vague sense of something, or a thought that has not yet taken shape. It is also possible to discover what one was thinking only through the process of putting it into words.

Yet being unarticulated is not the same as being unformed. Even when no sentence yet exists, relationships among concepts and judgments about what matters may already be in place. A person may perceive the overall configuration but still have to retrace its paths one by one in order to convert it into language.

Sometimes the answer to a problem becomes apparent in an instant, while explaining the reasons for it takes much longer. What is happening in such a case is probably not that an answer has appeared without any basis. It may be that accumulated knowledge and experience have already become connected in a particular configuration, allowing the overall structure to emerge first, after which an explanatory sequence must be constructed.

A single thought can give rise to multiple texts because thought has a broader structure than any one text can contain. The same content can be expressed for specialists or beginners, as a brief explanation or an extended one, through a diagram or through speech. Each form may convey part of the thought, but none of them is the thought in its entirety.

This does not diminish the value of writing. Writing allows us to carry our thoughts beyond their immediate time and place and pass them to others. What has been written can be reread, examined, compared, and connected to other ideas. Much of the knowledge humanity has accumulated, including philosophy, science, law, and literature, has been preserved through writing.

The question here is not whether writing should be regarded as an adequate or inadequate medium. It is what writing is well suited to preserving, and what it has difficulty preserving. Writing is highly effective at preserving thought once that thought has been given a communicable form. It does not, however, preserve the entire structure from which the text was produced.

Writing requires the selection of one path from among many possibilities. Alternative explanations considered along the way, hypotheses that were rejected, and questions that remained unresolved often disappear from the finished text. The clearer the final text becomes, the harder it may be to see the wider field from which it was cut.

Historically, what has survived for later generations has consisted mainly of finished texts. When drafts, letters, records of conversations, or revision histories remain, they allow us to trace parts of the process that led to the final work. But later readers have had to infer how those records were connected within the author’s mind and what kind of structure they formed there.

Writing is thus cut from the writer’s multilayered, multidimensional thought and then reconstructed by the reader within their own knowledge and experience. What writing preserves is the layer of expression situated between the two. A text can connect writer and reader, but it does not transfer the writer’s thought structure intact into the reader.

Could the structure that existed before writing be preserved in some other form? Could we retain not only the finished conclusion, but also where something failed to fit, which questions arose, what paths were followed, and which possibilities were set aside?

Until now, preserving thought over time has required converting it into an externally manageable form, such as writing, diagrams, audio, or video. It has been possible to retain large quantities of individual records, but much more difficult to preserve the relationships behind them. What could be stored was the output, not the structure that produced it.

The emergence of generative AI is beginning to change these conditions. AI can work not only with finished texts, but also with information recorded in different forms, including dialogue, revision histories, and question-and-answer exchanges, and can connect those records to one another. This does not mean that human thought itself can now be preserved directly. It does, however, create the possibility of retaining something closer to the structure of thought than was possible when writing alone served as the primary record.

The term “uncompressed,” as used in this series, does not mean reproducing the state of the human brain perfectly and without compression. Nor does it mean transferring thought directly to another person without loss. It refers instead to a principle of preservation: simplification, sequencing, summarization, and omission performed for the benefit of a particular anticipated reader or readership should not be made irreversible at the stage when thought is stored.

At the point of preservation, the aim is to retain a structure that remains as close as possible to the writer’s thought. When that thought is later presented to someone, it can be expressed in a form suited to that person’s knowledge and purpose. Compression is not eliminated. It is shifted from a single irreversible operation performed before preservation to a conditional operation performed each time an output is produced.

Even under such a model, the writer’s original text would remain. Those who can understand it on its own could simply read it as it is. The original text is also a distinct work in its own right, shaped by the writer’s chosen perspective and expression. By adding behind it the thought structure that could not be fully contained within the text, we would not replace the text, but allow readers to move further into what lies behind it.

Adapting an explanation through AI would remain only a means of supporting better understanding. The vocabulary, level of abstraction, examples, length, and order of presentation could change, but the underlying content of the thought should not. The aim would not be to give different conclusions to different people, but to let each person approach the same thought through an appropriate point of entry.

Writing is unlikely to disappear. It may instead take on a wider range of forms as one mode of presentation generated from a preserved thought structure. If the relationships and criteria of judgment behind a text remain intact even as its expression changes for different readers, writing may shift from being a fixed object of preservation to becoming an entry point into thought.

This series will begin by examining how writing has represented thought. What choices are made when thought is converted into writing? What remains, and what recedes into the background? By considering the history of how written language has preserved knowledge, we can trace the structural changes that occur when thought is articulated as text.

From there, the series will consider how thought before writing might be understood and what, within it, should be preserved. The point is not to discard writing, but to stop treating it as the only form in which thought can be stored. The aim is to explore the possibility of retaining the text while also allowing access to the structure of thought behind it.

The next chapter will examine more closely the process by which thought is translated into writing. How is a multilayered, multidimensional structure cut, ordered, and converted into a one-dimensional form? We will consider more concretely what takes place within that transformation.
