Pay special attention to the little inlet and outlet channels at the bottom of the reservoir. They’re tiny and easily clogged. If you spot corrosion, just admit defeat and replace the cylinder.

Fun fact: My ZX-6R’s brake fluid hadn’t been changed in nearly a decade. Yikes. But, after a good clean, the master cylinders were still in one piece.

Step 6: Install New Seals

Put some red rubber grease on the new rubber boot, then slide it onto the front piston. Be gentle — no sharp objects allowed! You don’t want to ruin your new boot.

Step 11: Reinstall Everything

Okay, now that everything’s sparkling, pop that reservoir back on and bolt the master cylinder into place. For the rear cylinder, make sure you tighten that nut, and double-check the cotter pin — if it’s looking a little too shabby, ditch it and get a fresh one. Trust me, it’ll save you headaches later!

For the front cylinder, check if the clamp has an arrow for the installation direction. Once that’s sorted, tighten the bolts — top one first, then the bottom. But hey, no need to go Hulk on it — just 6.9 Nm of torque is all you need.

Lastly, throw on those fresh brass washers for the brake lines and tighten the banjo bolts. And if you’ve got two lines, don’t forget the washer between them! It’s the little things, folks.

Step 12: Add Brake Fluid & Bleed the System

Now, top off with fresh brake fluid. Bleeding the system is a bit tricky, but a couple of quick pumps should help expel any air. If you’re struggling, try “bench bleeding” — pull the brake lever, loosen the brake line bolt, and tighten it back up as the lever reaches the end of its stroke. Repeat until fluid flows smoothly.
