Pretty Enough to Be Lusted After, Not Pretty Enough to Be Loved

When attraction is easy, but genuine affection feels impossible.

There is a particular kind of heartbreak that comes from realising people notice your body before they notice your soul.

They complement your appearance. They admire your photos. They flirt. They pursue. They desire. And for a moment, it feels like being wanted.

Until you realise that being wanted and being loved are not the same thing. Because desire is often shallow.

It asks, “What can I get from you?” Love asks, “Who are you beneath all of this?” For a long time, I confused the two. I thought attention meant affection. I thought being pursued meant being valued.

I thought if someone found me attractive enough to want, they would eventually care enough to stay.

But attraction alone is not intimacy. And desire alone is not devotion.

Some people are interested in your appearance but never curious about your mind. They learn your favourite colour but never your fears.

They know what you look like when you’re smiling, but not what keeps you awake at night. They want access to your body without earning access to your heart.

And slowly, that begins to create a dangerous question: Am I only lovable in pieces? Am I attractive enough to be desired but not enough to be chosen?

But perhaps the question itself is wrong.

Because love was never supposed to be earned through beauty. And it was never supposed to depend on how desirable someone finds you.

The people who only see your appearance will always miss the most important parts of you.

Your humor. Your kindness. Your resilience. Your dreams. Your heartbreaks. Your humanity.

And anyone who overlooks those things was never seeing you clearly to begin with.

The truth is, being desired is common. Being deeply known is rare. Being looked at is easy. Being understood is not.

And maybe that is why so many people feel lonely despite receiving attention. Because attention is not the same thing as connection.

At the end of the day, most of us are not searching for admiration. We are searching for recognition.

Someone who looks beyond what we offer the world and chooses us for who we are underneath it all. Not because we are beautiful. Not because we are useful. Not because we are convenient. But because we are human.

And that kind of love has nothing to do with being pretty enough.

The right person will not just admire how you look; they will cherish who you are when nobody else is watching.

If these words resonated with you, leave some claps. It may help this piece reach someone who has mistaken attention for love and is still learning the difference.
