If you work remotely, there’s roughly a one-in-six chance that you, or somebody one desk away from you, owns a mouse jiggler.
Maybe it’s a little USB stick. Maybe it’s a rotating wheel-based gadget. Maybe it’s a smartphone app that nudges your cursor every few minutes so your status light stays green while you make coffee, take a walk, or focus on the other job nobody knows about.
For a long time, that worked.
Monitoring software was crude. The jiggler was a clever workaround. Both sides of the remote-work standoff treated it as a kind of unspoken truce.
That truce is over.
In the last 24 months, Wells Fargo, Charles Schwab, EY, Accenture, and PwC have all fired employees specifically for using mouse jigglers. Not for being unproductive. Not for missing deadlines. For using a mouse jiggler.
The story is usually the same: HR sends a calm email, a calendar invite appears, and the conversation lasts ten minutes.
The reason this is happening now is simple.
Detection got good.
And the people selling cheap mouse jigglers never bothered to update their hardware, because they were never really selling stealth in the first place. They were selling the idea of stealth.

How Mouse Jigglers Got Caught
There are three categories of jiggler in the wild today, and all three have been compromised in different ways.
1. The Software Mouse Mover
The first is the software jiggler: a program that sits on your machine and injects phantom mouse movements at a regular cadence.
It’s the oldest form of activity simulation, and the easiest to detect.
Software jigglers were always a polite fiction. From the operating system’s perspective, they’re just another running process. Every modern monitoring suite — Hubstaff, Time Doctor, ActivTrak, Teramind, Insightful, Veriato, Kickidler — can read the process list of the machine it’s installed on.
If your IT department wants a list of everyone running a known mouse-mover utility, they can have it before lunch.
Worse, modern monitoring tools don’t even need to find the process. They can look at behavior.
Real human mouse movement is fractal, jittery, and full of micro-pauses. A software jiggler produces movement that, statistically, looks nothing like a human.
Behavioral analytics simply ask: does this cursor look like a person is moving it?
Increasingly, the answer is no.
2. The USB Mouse Jiggler
The second kind is the USB hardware jiggler: the small, anonymous-looking stick you plug into a spare port. A light comes on, and the box tells you it is “undetectable.”
That claim is doing a lot of work.
Here is what actually happens when you plug in a USB mouse jiggler.
Your computer sees a brand-new USB device. It assigns that device a class, usually HID — Human Interface Device — reads its vendor ID and product ID, and registers it in the operating system’s device manager.
From that moment on, everything that device does is logged like any other peripheral.
That means three things the marketing copy does not tell you.
First, your computer knows the jiggler is there. It shows up in Device Manager on Windows. Anybody with admin access — which IT usually has — can see it.
Second, its USB ID is broadcast. Most USB jigglers identify themselves with a fixed vendor and product ID. Modern monitoring software ships with a known-bad list of these IDs, the same way antivirus software ships with a known-bad list of executables.
Third, its movement pattern is mechanical. A USB jiggler moves the cursor at clockwork-precise intervals, often in the same little arc or square loop, over and over. Real human input does not. Behavioral monitoring can flag the pattern even if the device itself is unrecognized.
So when an HR ping arrives weeks after you started using a jiggler, the machine on the other side didn’t catch you. It found you the instant you plugged it in.
The delay was just somebody clicking through a queue.
3. The Wheel-Based Jiggler
The third category is the most interesting, because at first glance it looks like the safest option.
These are the physical, mechanical jigglers: the ones that sit on your desk and gently rotate a wheel that drags your mouse around in a slow circle.
The pitch is intuitive. There is no software running. No USB device on the machine. The mouse is just a mouse, sitting on a moving surface.
To the computer, it looks like a person is moving the mouse.
The problem is that the wheel is not a person.
Single-wheel jigglers are the giveaway. A single rotating wheel produces movement that is mathematically perfect: constant speed, constant radius, identical pattern, repeating forever.
From the cursor data alone, modern monitoring software can spot this in seconds. Real human movement varies in speed, accelerates and decelerates erratically, and never produces a flawless circle.
A single-wheel jiggler produces a flawless circle every time.
That is the whole problem.
Two-wheel jigglers are the upgrade most people don’t realize exists. By spinning two wheels at slightly different rates, the mouse traces a more complex pattern — a Lissajous-style curve rather than a circle.
To the casual observer, it looks more like human movement. It’s, undeniably, harder to detect than a single-wheel jiggler.
But “harder” is not the same as “impossible.”
Two-wheel jigglers still produce movement that is, on close inspection, mathematically generated. There are entire stretches where the cursor moves in a perfectly straight line between curve segments. There are passages where the speed is exactly constant for a measurable duration.
Humans do neither of those things. Humans cannot.
Hand muscles produce micro-tremor. Finger pressure shifts. Attention drifts.
A perfectly straight line of cursor movement, even for half a second, is a fingerprint of mechanical input.
Modern monitoring software is now looking for exactly these signatures: the constant-speed segment, the geometrically straight line, the periodicity that emerges over a few minutes of recorded movement.
A two-wheel jiggler is harder to catch than a one-wheel jiggler, but it is not invisible. And as detection algorithms improve, the gap is closing fast.
Why People Don’t Realize They’ve Been Caught
The hardest thing to internalize about all of this is that nothing changes on your end when a jiggler is detected.
The light is still on. The cursor still moves. Your status still says active.
The jiggler doesn’t know it has been seen.
In some ways, that is the most insidious part of the whole arrangement. Detection is invisible to the user.
