Angel on Four Paws

Lusia, our kitty, had a lot of luck in her life. We found her by accident — or maybe there are no accidents? Maybe it was fate that made it happen, that we were the lucky ones who came across her that day. We could have simply gone straight ahead and never known about her. But things turned out differently. We turned off the road to pick mullein flowers.

Then we heard a squeak, a whimper. It is hard to describe the sound. It was like a tiny bird calling for help. The strange thing was that the sound was coming from below, not above. In the thicket — a tangle of branches and nettles taller than me — I followed the sound and my heart. I trampled through the nettles with my shoes. Of course, I got stung all over, but I was rewarded with the sight of a pair of small, frightened eyes staring up at me.

It was a tiny kitten, curled up in fear. Its little head and nose were dirty. When I tried to get closer, it crawled even deeper into the bushes, probably terrified and guided by wild instinct. I knew I would not be able to get the little one out by myself.

So I went back to my bicycle and told my husband what I had seen. He immediately said, “Now I’ll go and try.”

It was not easy. He approached from another side, but at first he could not even see the kitten. Then he changed direction, and I heard him call out, “There! I see it!”

It still took quite a while before he managed to catch the poor little thing. Finally, he came back smiling, triumphantly holding the tiny kitten. My beloved hero. This is exactly why I love and appreciate him so much. I can always rely on him.

I thought to myself, yes, it is wonderful that we managed to save it. But what do we do now?

How were we supposed to transport it safely? And that awful smell — the little thing smelled like a whole herd of piglets. On top of that, a foul-smelling discharge mixed with blood was leaking from its bottom. We knew we had to take it with us. It was the very last chance to save its tiny, fragile life.

I took my cycling vest and wrapped the kitten in it. Then I placed it in the front basket, worried it might jump out during the ride. But it was so weak and cold that as soon as it felt the warmth of the vest, it fell asleep sweetly.

At that moment, I truly thought these might be its final moments.

But the little one surprised me. After a while, it opened its curious eyes. Beautiful, large eyes, as if painted, framed with gray fur and dark stripes. That look and its helplessness made us fall in love with it instantly, and we decided to protect it.

When we got home, it turned out that the kitten still could not eat or drink by itself. Its hind legs were hanging limply. What were we supposed to do?

Then I remembered that I had a small jar of liquid honey with cloves with me. Both ingredients are very healthy, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. I dipped my finger into the sticky mixture, gently forced open the tiny mouth, and spread a little inside.

The kitten looked at me with huge, surprised eyes, and then I noticed a sucking reflex.

Since it seemed to like the honey, I quickly took the opportunity and offered it some milk. It was all I had — milk from a carton. Besides, what else could I give such a tiny creature that did not even know how to drink?

It drank a little with appetite and then fell asleep, curled up into a tiny ball.

I had to wash the vest because it was completely dirty and smelled terrible. I also wanted to bathe the kitten right away, but it was far too weak, so I had to postpone that until it regained some strength and the diarrhea stopped.

We were worried whether it would survive the night.

I wrapped it in a warm, soft scarf.

It survived.

So in the morning, I had to repeat the honey treatment because it still did not want to drink. After that, however, it drank eagerly. Unfortunately, the diarrhea still did not leave it alone. Again, everything had to be washed.

And so, day after day, it became a fight for its life. Laundry, cleaning, baths, medicine, and visits to the veterinary clinic. There were many visits — very expensive ones too — plus injections, antibiotics, and tablets.

But it was all worth it.

Today, this little kitten gives us warmth and love in return. It turned out to be a girl, so we named her Lusia.

Our little treasure, sent from heaven.

After the death of my parents, she became a great comfort to me. When I hug her tiny furry body, I feel something impossible to describe. Warmth, peace, and as if happiness hormones are being released inside me.

I adore it when she purrs while I stroke her, cuddles up to me, and lies near my heart. She is like a healing patch placed over a huge, open wound.

I have lost so much recently — both of my parents within less than a year. It feels as if one somehow pulled the other along. It is hard to come to terms with something like that, although we must. Such is life. No one and nothing is given to us forever.

As consolation, fate sent me a little angel on four paws.

She helps me climb out of the abyss of sadness and pain. My husband and this tiny creature are a tremendous source of support for me.

And what even he could not fully do, this little one somehow managed — unexpectedly, through her helplessness, joy, and simple presence.

Small creatures carry something within them that we adults have long forgotten: endless energy, childlike joy, and love, because they love with their entire tiny hearts.

“Small crumbs of happiness mend our wounded hearts.” 🐾✨

Lusia, Our Kitty

Lusia, our kitty, our youngest little kitten — sometimes I have the feeling that she is not just a cat, but someone close to me who came back from the other side in the form of a kitten.

Never before has any animal treated me in such an exceptional way, and I have truly had contact with a great number of animals throughout my life.

This tiny kitten gives me so much love, tenderness, presence, and joy. If she could, she probably would not leave my side even for a second.

She follows me like a shadow, step by step.

She always tries to be as close to me as possible. Whenever I sit down somewhere, she either curls up on my chest or settles herself between my legs when I sit cross-legged. Sometimes she sits on my lap, snuggles into my side, or climbs even higher and lies across my neck like a warm, furry scarf, as if she wants to pour her warmth into me while also taking some of mine for herself.

And when she gets into mischief and I raise my voice to tell her not to do something, she literally talks back to me in her own cat way.

I adore our little conversations. Most of the time, when she answers me with her funny, squeaky little voice, I burst out laughing.

And whenever I sit down to eat something, she always tries either to beg for a little bite for herself or to simply “steal” it with her tiny, clever paw.

Of course, in our home, the animals always get their food first. But before we even sit down to eat, Lusia is already by our side, checking to see what else she might be able to snack on from our plates.

Sometimes she sits innocently on my lap, pretending to be a little angel. Then, the moment a person looks away, she cleverly hooks a piece of food onto her claw and runs away proudly with her prize.

At times, she races around the apartment like a little maniac or jumps onto the walls. She can leap up to one and a half meters high and cling there for a moment.

A true acrobat.

Sometimes she bounces off the walls as if she were training parkour.

She is the biggest little rascal we have ever had, but also the most lovable one.

We love our little troublemaker so much.

And when I do not feel well, she senses it perfectly.

Then she becomes very calm and well-behaved. She lies on top of me, as if trying in her own feline way to help me feel better. 🐾✨“Angels do not always have wings. Sometimes they have soft fur and four tiny paws.” 🐾✨

God was gracious to us — He sent us love on four paws. I am deeply grateful for this little being, who brings more warmth, peace, and unconditional affection into my life each day than many people ever could. They say that when one door closes, another opens. When we lose something, life sometimes brings us something new. Not to erase the loss, but to soothe the heart and remind us that love always finds its way back to us.
