In the ever-expanding ecosystem of Florida Everglades, a network of the invasive spectacled caiman was rapidly being built. Originating in Central and South America, it has been populating far outside of its native habitat, in places such as: Cuba, Puerto Rico, San Andres, and Florida. Florida has been the home of many introduced animals, majority being reptiles and amphibians, which comes at no shock considering its humid and moist environment throughout the year. Florida became a home to the spectacled caiman in as early as the 1970s, but its first introduction was in the 1950s with an animal trade in response to the ban of the American Alligator. A 2016 paper by A. Michael and E. Richard categorized invasive species by their risk potential, and the spectacled caiman was categorized as a species to have one of the “highest impact concerns” on local ecosystems. They co-exist in both the natural and urban world, having a broad range of where they can build a habitat. The part that is the most alarming about them, is that they feed on species that are already considered protected and endangered.
Invasive species plague Florida, making it hard to maintain their biodiversity. In response, the federal and state government partnered up in the Water Resources development act 2000, which enabled the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). The CERP became one the largest ecosystem restoration projects, spanning 16 counties and 1800 square miles of central and south Florida. The project plans to restore and protect Florida’s most vulnerable ecosystem, and the thousands of miles protected guarantee protection for these species. At least they were supposed to.
The Caiman species are now posing a significant threat to the protected ecosystem, as new research shows that they have been invading at a much faster pace than previously known. Apparently, they have already been well-established in the vulnerable ecosystem, posing a real threat to the protection of biodiversity, the main goal of the CERP. In 2023, initial efforts started with the caiman removal project, with a partnership between the University of Florida and Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Frank Muzzoti, researcher and professor of wildlife ecology, worked on the caiman removal project, and he mentioned that, “Even with early detection and rapid response, long-term removal efforts and multi-agency cooperation — bolstered by continued monitoring — will be key to success.” Promise has come from this project, where they hope to keep retaining the caiman population. The important outcome of this project was the reduction of caimans in the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands and C-111 Canal Project areas, areas vital in South Florida’s infrastructure.
The problem arises when two things are considered. First, the caimans have insane reproductive speeds, which is one of the things that make them such a high risk invasive species in the first place. Their breeding can take place at almost any time, as mating season is when it is dry, and birthing happens in wet seasons, but Florida is a gold mine for these conditions. Ellis T., found one of the only confirmed caiman nests, which contained about 37 eggs, that had an incubation to hatching time of about 85 days. The second problem is that caimans were still used in the animal trading scene, and they have not been banned yet. In the end, this in itself will not stop the flow of caimans coming in as they are frequently used in fashion designs. It is estimated that more than 18,000 spectacled caimans have been imported from various regions into Florida from 1999–2018, with consistent flows coming in every year to the present, a total of potentially 330,705 caimans since 1977–2024 (CRBC, Naples.)
Although it is unclear whether the Caimans will be able to thrive in the Everglades habitat, however their rapid reproduction and high adaptability make it highly likely they will stay there. Their imminent threat comes from a combination of all the previously mentioned factors of the caiman species, where their predation put the protected species in jeopardy, defeating the purpose of even creating the CERP. Their rapid expansion creates a threat in restructuring Everglades food web but also undermines its ecological integrity. High adaptability allows caimans to inhabit spaces meant for the native wildlife, and that takes away the space meant to potentially grow the population of a threatened native species, putting the entire sanctuary at risk. They disrupt the natural food chain as a natural predator, increasing the competition amongst predators in the native ecosystem, and also the increase of predation leads to a decrease in biodiversity as the typical caiman diet includes those that are necessary in increasing a biome’s biodiversity. Caimans prey on native fish, amphibians, and small reptiles, including species like Nerodia snakes, this predation can disrupt food web structure and reduce biodiversity in restored wetlands.
Though the aforementioned methods in stopping the growth of caimans have worked in spot reducing the amount of caimans, it has not completely removed the problem of them being in the Everglades. New research from the University of Florida show that the caimans are actually far more adaptable and reproductive than previously thought when considering counter-measures. Researchers say because of current climate conditions, the invasive species may spread faster right now than in their native habitats.
Future projects in tracking include using satellites to track the female population to understand their movements and to locate potential nesting areas. Some other projects are in the works such as environmental DNA testing, which will allow researchers to locate nest and locations of caimans in general. In the end, the researchers are also looking towards citizen participation for help in fighting the ecological integrity of the everglades. Though they discourage citizens from taking direct actions, in comparison to efforts in limiting the Burmese Python, because of their resemblance to the American Alligator, a native species. Instead, the state government is encouraging citizens to just call and leave a tip as to where they think they might have seen a caiman.
