A ride-hailing driver himself and a father of three, he emerged as one of the most respected voices in the fight for dignity, fair pay, and better conditions in the gig economy. Colleagues and workers know him as a dedicated organizer the man who earned the nickname “Algorithm” during a recent trip to Kenya, a nod to his deep understanding of the opaque systems that govern their daily earnings.

With no salary from any organization, union, or platform, Ayoade has funded meetings, legal support, advocacy, and emergency assistance for app-drivers using only his modest personal savings and investments. “I use my little investment to keep the struggle going,” he often reflects. Yet despite the financial strain, threats, and exhaustion, he has never wavered.

The Spark That Ignited a Movement

In 2016–2017, platforms like Uber and Bolt slashed app-driver earnings by up to 40% without consultation. For Ayoade, a working app-driver at the time, this meant longer hours often 10 to 15 hours a day just to maintain the same income. Instead of accepting the hardship in silence, he began organizing.

What started as informal meetings among frustrated drivers in Lagos grew into structured associations. He co-founded key groups, including the National Union of Professional App-Based Transport Workers (NUPABTW) and later played a pivotal role in forming the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) -Nigeria’s first union for platform workers.

Ayoade’s commitment is deeply personal. He has poured his own resources into the cause while balancing family responsibilities. There have been difficult periods of financial pressure, yet his independence has earned him the trust of thousands of drivers and riders across Nigeria.

• Built solidarity networks across platforms and cities, and supported legal aid and welfare initiatives for affected workers.
• Represented Nigerian gig workers at forums, including engagements linked to the International Labour Organization.*

“A lot has been achieved,” Ayoade says, “but we still have a long way to go.”

The Road Ahead: Challenges in Nigeria, Africa, and Beyond

Despite the progress, app-based workers continue to face serious hurdles:

• *Opaque algorithms that determine earnings and ratings.
• No reliable social protections — health insurance, pensions, or compensation for accidents.
• Income volatility driven by fuel costs, data expenses, and constant price adjustments.
• Arbitrary account deactivations and safety risks on the job.*

These issues are not unique to Nigeria. Similar struggles play out across Africa (including Kenya,Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa, urganda, Tanzania, Senegal, Togo, Benin etc where Ayoade recently connected with fellow advocates), India, Europe, and the United States. Ayoade hopes that sharing his journey will help highlight these shared concerns and push for stronger protections globally.

Ayoade Ibrahim envisions a future where app-based work is recognized as real work with transparent algorithms, fair earnings floors, legal protections, and genuine collective bargaining rights. He continues to call for unity among workers, stronger alliances with labour movements, and constructive engagement with platforms and regulators.

His story is one of quiet courage: an ordinary driver who refused to stay silent and, through persistence and personal sacrifice, became an extraordinary advocate.
