My 60000 Km Journey with an EV: An Indian Perspective
Electric vehicles (EVs) are often touted as the future of transportation. As an avid advocate for EVs and an owner of a Nexon EV for over 60000 km, I wanted to share my experience and perspective on EVs in the Indian context. This is a comprehensive first-hand account for those considering an EV purchase.
Why I Chose an EV
With rising fuel prices and environmental concerns, I wanted to move to a more sustainable mode of transport. The lower running costs and maintenance requirements also attracted me to EVs.
I considered other EV options like the MG ZS and Hyundai Kona. But the Nexon EV won me over with its balance of features, driving range and price.
Efficiency and Environmental Benefits
Firstly, electricity is a highly efficient energy source. Even if generated from fossil fuels, EVs are inherently more efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). And when charged from renewable sources, EVs have a clear carbon footprint advantage. If you have a Rooftop Solar plant installed, like me, then the environmental and cost benefits are going to be huge.
Essentially, an EV only differs from an ICEV in two components — the engine is replaced by an electric motor and the fuel tank by a battery pack. Other than that, the vehicle itself remains the same.

Range and Battery Life Concerns
Like any device, an EV’s range depends on how much power you draw from the battery. The power consumption can be monitored by looking at the Wh/Km which is displayed in the dash board. If you can achieve a lower Wh/Km your range will increase. More aggressive driving reduces range per charge. The range anxiety has reduced significantly thanks to increasing public charging infrastructure.
Battery life depends on usage patterns, temperature, state of charge, and charging practices. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the Nexon EV are designed for 3,000–5,000 charge cycles. With opportunity charging, this can go up to 7,000 cycles. Factors impacting LFP battery life include temperature extremes, depth of discharge, load patterns, and charging habits. But good battery management and opportunistic charging can optimize battery lifetime.
3,000 cycles translates to around 600,000 km, assuming 200 km range per charge. Battery failures are often limited to one or two cells, which can be replaced easily.
Lower Carbon Footprint
Studies by the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) show EVs have a lower lifetime carbon footprint compared to ICEVs. Battery manufacturing is offset by higher efficiency and lower emissions during use. The finding in the reports states, “Only battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles have the potential to achieve the magnitude of life-cycle GHG emissions reductions needed to meet Paris Agreement goals.”

My Experience Driving over 60000 km
Here are some highlights from my experience driving the Nexon EV over 60000 km:
- Achieved real-world range of 240–260 km per charge on average
- Power consumption of 122±14 Wh/km under normal driving
- Completed over 240 battery cycles so far
- Maintained 5.3:1 ratio of normal to fast charging
- The maximum range achieved on a single charge was 290 km with AC

From the image above, you can see that the real-world range is about 290 Km with a full charge (safe usable range of about 230 km with 80%). The basic calculation to be followed is, Range = [Distance travelled/ % Charge used] x 100. The Wh/Km is an indication of how good your driving is at the point. A lower Wh/Km will give you a higher range and vice versa. The range and performance vary with load and number of passengers. Of course, the range reduces if driving aggressively in Sport mode. Steep uphill climbs drain more battery, but regeneration downhill recovers some of that. So it balances out over most routes.
I no longer have range anxiety thanks to the increased public charging infrastructure. There are charging points every 50–100 km on most major routes now, in my state of Kerala.

- Electricity cost: Rs 0.97/km (Considering my NC:FC ratio and EB rate of Rs.6/kWh and FC rate of Rs.19/kWh)

- EV: Rs 0.15/km or Rs 9,000
- Petrol: Rs 0.65/km or Rs 39,000
- Savings of Rs 30,000
Tax Benefits
- Tax deduction on EV loan interest u/s 80EEB up to Rs 1.5 lakhs
- Savings of Rs 74,000
Total Savings — Rs 5,82,800
The savings offset the higher purchase price, and I also have a lower environmental footprint.

Key Considerations Before Buying an EV
While my experience with the Nexon EV has been positive, EVs may not suit every buyer’s needs. Here are some factors to consider:
Daily Driving Requirements
If your daily mileage needs are very low, under 50km for example, the return on investment for an EV takes longer to realize. The higher upfront cost may not justify the savings on fuel and maintenance. In such cases, a petrol or CNG vehicle may work out cheaper.
Long Distance Driving
For frequent long distance drives over 1000 km, an EV may not be optimal. While the public charging infrastructure is improving, long road trips require extended charging stops, adding hours to your travel time.
Access to Charging
At home charging access is ideal for EV owners. If you street park or have no designated parking, installing a home charger may be difficult. Public charging network is improving, but still inconsistent outside major cities.
Budget
EVs still command a premium over petrol variants. If you have a tight budget, the higher initial cost may be difficult to justify.
So in summary, for high daily mileage commuting, access to home/office charging, and mostly city driving, EVs make sense. However, analyze your specific usage patterns before deciding. An EV works for me, but may not suit every buyer.
