TwitterPilot: Simplifying Twitter Tasks with an Automated Web App

Are you a Twitter user who’s struggling to manage your account? Are you finding it overwhelming to follow or unfollow users, or to delete multiple tweets simultaneously? If so, you’re not alone. As a fellow Twitter user, I’ve faced these challenges too. That’s why I decided to develop TwitterPilot — a web app that automates these tasks, making it easier for Twitter users to manage their accounts.

My friend, Goodness Mbakara, and I collaborated on this project. I handled the front-end development, while he took care of the back-end. Our goal was to create a solution that would benefit Twitter users worldwide, by simplifying these tedious tasks.

To develop the project, we used a range of technologies. For the front-end, we opted for HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, without any additional frameworks. We chose this approach to concentrate on delivering the project on time and strengthening our understanding of these fundamental front-end technologies.

On the back-end, we used Django, Django Rest Framework, Twitter API, Three-Way-Oauth 1, Python Library Tweepy, and Git and GitHub for version control. We designed the app to be responsive and compatible with mobile, so users can access it from any device.

TwitterPilot includes several key features, such as the ability to follow, unfollow, and delete tweets automatically. Users can specify a time frame for each feature and select the type of accounts to follow based on their interests. For example, if they’re interested in tech-related accounts, they can choose to follow accounts that mention specific keywords related to tech in their bios.

However, TwitterPilot does have some limitations. Users can’t tweet new tweets from the website or edit their Twitter profile. Additionally, they can’t retrieve their Twitter account password from the website.

Developing TwitterPilot presented several challenges. Firstly, we needed to select the most appropriate technologies to ensure the security of users’ Twitter accounts, privacy, and terms and conditions between our project and the app’s users. Secondly, obtaining approval from Twitter to generate the Twitter API took us several weeks of trying. However, with the help of a friend who gave us access to their Twitter Developer Account, we were able to overcome this obstacle.

One of the most significant technical challenges we faced was integrating the back-end code with the front-end code. As someone who handled the front-end development, I had to learn how to call APIs from the back-end, which was a new experience for me. To overcome this challenge, I watched several tutorials and searched online for a better understanding and implementation.

We also faced environmental challenges, such as a lack of constant power supply, poor network connectivity, and data subscriptions. These factors slowed down our progress, but we were determined to push through and complete the project.

Overall, developing TwitterPilot has been a rewarding experience. It has enabled me to hone my skills in hard coding, and soft skills such as communication, collaboration, networking, problem-solving, and dealing with difficult situations in the tech space. I’m proud of what my team and I have accomplished, and I’m excited to see how TwitterPilot will benefit Twitter users worldwide.
