Autonomous agentic payments are inevitable

Deloitte shipped a brand new report about the future of payments (the full version is here)

This is what we need to know:

• agentic AI as a structural change in payments: not just better UX, but a redefinition of who (or what) is the economic actor initiating transactions. Unlike GenAI (prompt-led), agentic AI can autonomously execute multi-step decisions — covering routine bill flows through higher-value actions — pushing humans toward oversight, policy enforcement, and governance
• agentic AI enables a move from push payments (user-initiated) to pull payments (agent-initiated), where software can initiate payments and adjacent treasury actions (e.g., optimizing idle cash) on behalf of users. That implies the “payment moment” becomes the output of an always-on optimization loop rather than a discrete user action
• For businesses, agentic systems reduce manual work across accounts payable/receivable and can optimize payment timing, financing, and logistics — potentially redesigning workflows via autonomous invoice processing, scheduling, initiation, and exceptions handling. Deloitte explicitly links the upside to richer, more structured data environments (notably ISO 20022 elsewhere in the report), which increase what agents can reliably automate end-to-end.
• autonomy increases the need for trust and transparency, requiring confidence agents act in the user’s best interest — supported by explainability, clear audit trails, and strong compliance safeguards. They also note governance patterns becoming standard, including real-time audit logs, access controls, and anomaly detection to ensure traceability and accountability.
• Right now, at this moment network providers testing agentic payment frameworks and highlights how “always-on,” programmable payment mechanisms can support autonomous ecosystems — positioning programmable rails (e.g., stablecoins in other sections) as a potential substrate for agent-led commerce.
