Just the Right Amount Is Best

Like a weight lifted off my shoulders, this Thursday was bright and clear.

Both adults and children basked in the sunlight, their happiness shining through their faces.

It was the last school day before spring break. I should have brought my sunglasses, I thought, smiling to myself at this small, luxurious regret.

Some of you may already know this, but in Swedish, there is a word: Lagom.

It means just the right amount, moderation, not too much, not too little – a concept that reflects Swedish values and lifestyle.

What struck me as wonderful about this idea is that “just the right amount” is different for everyone.

It’s not something others decide for you; rather, you determine what feels right for yourself.

I deeply resonate with this way of thinking – acknowledging and accepting that what is “just right” varies from person to person.

Something that is “just right” should not be too much or too little.

Coffee that’s too hot is difficult to drink, while lukewarm coffee can be disappointing.

The amount my husband takes when he says, “Just one bite,” and the amount my daughter takes when she says the same thing are completely different.

Likewise, your “just right” and my “just right” are not the same.

When I lived in Japan, I felt overwhelmed by the crowds, the flood of advertisements and information, and the sheer number of buildings in the city.

There wasn’t much greenery, and if I didn’t follow the latest trends, I felt left out of conversations.

For me, it was not a “just right” place.

Some people say Vancouver is boring because there isn’t much entertainment.

But for me, it’s just right.

I don’t have to take packed trains, I rarely get caught in waves of people, and no one gives me sharp looks for walking around with a stroller.

The first Monday of spring break also brought sunshine.

Starting today, I’ll be dropping off and picking up my daughter from spring camp.

It’s only two hours, but within the hustle and bustle, it’s a precious moment of quiet relief.

Even if it’s not the perfect Lagom, that’s okay too.
