In 1450, approximately 30,000 books existed in all of Europe. By 1500, there were 20 million. The printing press did not gradually change European civilisation. It detonated it — and the explosion took two centuries to stop echoing.

Johannes Gutenberg completed his movable type press around 1440 in Mainz, Germany. He died in 1468, having lost his press to a creditor and receiving almost none of the financial benefit from his invention. Within 50 years of his death, the institution that had controlled the written word in Europe for a thousand years — the Catholic Church — had been permanently fractured. Within 150 years, Europe had fought a series of wars that killed a significant fraction of its population. Within 200 years, the political, religious, and intellectual landscape of the Western world was unrecognisable.

The printing press did not cause all of this. But it made all of it possible — by doing one thing that no technology before it had done at scale. It made it impossible for any single institution to control what people read.

How Information Worked Before

To understand what the printing press changed, you need to understand the information environment it replaced.

In medieval Europe, books were hand-copied by monks in monasteries. The process was extraordinarily labour-intensive — a single Bible could take a monk a year or more to copy. The result was that books were extraordinarily expensive — a single volume might cost as much as a house — and extraordinarily rare. Only the Church, universities, and the wealthiest nobles could afford significant collections.

This created a system in which the Church controlled not just what was written but what was read. Texts that contradicted Church doctrine could be suppressed simply by not being copied. Translations of the Bible into vernacular languages were actively discouraged — reading scripture was a priestly function, and access to the text in a language ordinary people could understand was considered dangerous.

The Church was not uniquely malicious in this arrangement. It was operating rationally within the information economics of its era. When controlling the means of information production meant controlling information itself, an institution that controlled the scriptoria controlled the intellectual world.

The press broke that arrangement in under a generation.

What Happened When the Press Arrived

The first major test of the printing press’s disruptive power came in 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to a church door in Wittenberg. This act of theological dissent had happened many times before in European history. What made it different was what happened next.

Within two weeks, Luther’s theses had been printed and distributed across Germany. Within two months, they had spread across Europe. The Church’s traditional mechanism for handling dissent — containing it, refuting it in controlled settings, and if necessary burning the heretic — was not designed for an opponent whose arguments could be reproduced in thousands of copies faster than they could be confiscated.

Luther himself recognised what the press meant. He called it “God’s highest and extremest act of grace” — understanding intuitively that the technology had fundamentally changed who could participate in theological debate.

The Reformation that followed split European Christianity in two and triggered wars that would kill millions. The relationship between the press and those wars is not simple — religious, political, and economic factors were all involved. But the press was the essential infrastructure. Without it, Lutheran ideas could have been suppressed the way earlier heresies had been suppressed. With it, suppression was impossible.

The Dangerous Pamphlet

The most destabilising product of the printing press was not the Bible. It was the pamphlet.

Pamphlets were cheap, fast, and difficult to censor. A printer could produce thousands in a day. They could be anonymous. They could be inflammatory. They required no institutional backing — a single writer with access to a press could reach as many readers as the most powerful institution in the land.

The pamphlet became the medium of revolution. Every major political upheaval in Europe between 1500 and 1800 — the English Civil War, the French Revolution, the American Revolution — was accompanied by an explosion of pamphlet literature that shaped public opinion in ways that rulers had no mechanism to counter.

Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, published in January 1776, argued for American independence in language accessible to ordinary colonists. It sold approximately 500,000 copies in a population of 2.5 million. The ideas it contained were not new. The ability to distribute them to a mass audience was.

Who Lost and Who Won

The printing press did not distribute its benefits equally. Institutions built on controlling information — the Church, centralised monarchies, established universities — found their power eroded by a technology they could not contain. Attempts at censorship were made everywhere, with varying degrees of success and uniform long-term failure.

The winners were those who understood that the press had changed the rules of influence. Rulers who embraced printing for their own propaganda found it a powerful tool. Merchants who recognised that a literate, informed population created new commercial possibilities built new economies. Scientists who could now share findings across national borders without institutional gatekeepers accelerated the pace of discovery dramatically.

The Scientific Revolution that produced Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton was not caused by the printing press. But it could not have unfolded at the speed it did without the ability to share results, build on previous work, and conduct debates across geography and time that printing made possible.

Why This Matters Now

In 2026, we are living through the early decades of a transition in information technology that the people experiencing it are comparing to the printing press more frequently than any other historical analogy.

The comparison is imperfect — every historical analogy is. But the structural similarity is genuine. A technology has arrived that dramatically lowers the cost of producing and distributing information, removes institutional gatekeepers from the process, and puts capabilities that were previously restricted to powerful organisations into the hands of individuals.

The printing press took 50 years to fracture the most powerful institution in Europe. It took 200 years for the full consequences of that fracture to stabilise into a new order. The people living through those 200 years did not know how it would end.

Gutenberg died without understanding what he had made. The goldsmith who lost his press to a creditor in 1468 had set in motion a chain of consequences that would reshape every government, religion, and system of knowledge in the Western world.

The inventors, engineers, and investors building AI systems today may be in a similar position. The technology is made. The consequences are only beginning.
