The History of the Active Release Technique

Working as an lead doctor for Bonsall Chiropractic in Westfield, New Jersey, Dr. Rene Garcia has been working in the chiropractic field for over 17 years since earning his doctorate in chiropractic (DC) in 2003. Dr. Rene Garcia leverages his doctorate in chiropractic (DC) and years of experience to inform his patients about their condition therefore, patient outcomes are more successful with patient compliance and understanding. He focuses on the whole body as everything works together and in particular the Active Release Technique.

Developed by Michael Leahy, D. C., Active Release Technique (ART) is a specialized manual therapy treatment for soft tissue, focusing on both chronic and acute injuries. While the technique was originally developed for the injuries sustained by athletes, ART is now used more generally, especially for injuries caused by overuse.

Utilizing over 500 moves tailored to each patient, ART can create a unique treatment for the patient’s individual needs. The benefits often come through the breaking up of scar tissue. Michael Leahy originally began working on ART in 1984, but it wasn’t patented until 1997. Currently, Active Release Techniques certifications are only offered to qualified individuals in the chiropractic or related fields.
