Index Bio Secures Japanese Patent for BioTag® Technology Accelerating Spatial Intelligence and AI-Powered World Models for Biosecurity
Milestone strengthens foundational IP for safe, proxy-based data generation — unlocking predictive pathogen risk modeling in a data-scarce domain.

BURLINGTON, ON, Canada — December 22, 2025 — Index Bio today announced that the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has provided a decision of allowance for a patent covering the company’s foundational BioTag® technology.
The allowed claims broadly cover methods and compositions for identifying and tracing biological material across bacteria, fungi, viruses, plants, and animals — validating the platform’s versatility and marking a key early milestone in Index Bio’s global intellectual property strategy.
Effective spatial intelligence and world models for pathogen risk have been constrained by a fundamental challenge: real pathogenic data is spotty, ethically risky to generate, and difficult to simulate at scale. By ‘world models,’ Index Bio refers to AI systems trained on ground-truth observations that predict how biological material moves and persists through real spaces over time. BioTags® address this bottleneck as a safe “measurement primitive” for biology, using inactive, non-pathogenic tracers that correlate predictably with how actual pathogens move, persist, and transfer through air, water, surfaces, and people — without live agent risk. Index Bio leverages this proxy approach to generate precise, repeatable ground-truth datasets tied to time and location, accelerating the development and validation of spatial intelligence and AI-powered world models that forecast biosecurity risks and enable proactive interventions.
“Pathogen risk modeling has been limited not by algorithms, but by the lack of validated, scalable data,” said Michael Borg, inventor of BioTag® and Founder & CEO of Index Bio. “We’re building spatial intelligence and biological world models on a foundation of safe, high-resolution proxy data — delivering the ground truth needed to understand risks in physical spaces, predict threats, validate controls, and protect lives and supply chains across industries.”
Why this matters
Biological risks in food safety, healthcare, pharmaceutical manufacturing, biomanufacturing, logistics, and beyond are inherently spatiotemporal — yet most approaches remain reactive due to data limitations. Unlike detection tools (which answer “what’s here now?”) or uncalibrated simulations, Index Bio’s platform provides a foundational layer for advancing spatial intelligence and predictive intelligence, helping organizations:
- Generate safe, repeatable spatiotemporal ground-truth datasets for biological movement
- Train and validate AI world models that forecast biological transfer and persistence across real environments
- Build continuous, location-aware risk maps that reveal pathways, hotspots, and intervention leverage points
- Generalize across domains because transport follows universal physics (air, water, surfaces, human motion)
About Index Bio
Index Bio uses its proprietary BioTag® platform to generate safe proxy data and build spatial intelligence and AI-powered world models for pathogen risk. As a defensible measurement primitive, it delivers high-resolution, repeatable datasets — using safe inactive microbial proxies that correlate predictably with pathogen behavior — enabling organizations and governments to measure, predict, and reduce biological threats with greater precision across domains.
