From KFC Rejection to Global Icon: The Unstoppable Rise of Jack Ma
In the world of entrepreneurship, success is often painted as a straight line of brilliance. But if you look at the life of Jack Ma, the founder of the e-commerce giant Alibaba, you’ll find a story built on a mountain of “No”. Before he became one of the wealthiest people on the planet, Jack Ma was a man who couldn’t even land a job as a fast-food server.
His journey is the ultimate playbook for anyone who has ever felt like a failure.
The King of Rejections
Jack Ma’s early life in Hangzhou, China, was anything but easy. Academics were a constant struggle; he failed his middle school entrance exams twice and his high school exams three times. When it came to the grueling “Gaokao” (the national college entrance exam), he failed twice before finally passing on his third attempt. On his first try, he scored a meager 1 point in math.

But the rejections didn’t stop at the classroom door. After graduating, Ma applied for 30 different jobs and was turned down by every single one. The most famous of these? Kentucky Fried Chicken. Out of 24 people who applied for the job in his city, 23 were hired — Jack Ma was the only one rejected. He even applied to be a police officer, where four out of five applicants were accepted, and again, he was the outlier.
Even his academic aspirations beyond China were met with silence. Ma famously applied to Harvard 10 times, and 10 times they said “No”.
The Turning Point: Discovering the Internet

In 1995, during a trip to the United States, Ma used a computer for the first time. He searched for “beer” and found results from various countries, but nothing from China. That was his “eureka” moment: he realized that China needed an online presence to connect its manufacturers with the world.
His first major attempt, a website-building business called China Pages, was not a commercial success and faced fierce competition. Yet, instead of viewing this as a defeat, Ma saw it as an essential lesson in the digital landscape.
Building an Empire in an Apartment

In 1999, Jack Ma gathered 18 friends and former colleagues in his modest lakeside apartment in Hangzhou. Together, they raised $50,000 to launch Alibaba, a platform designed to empower small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).
The early days were a battle for trust. Most Chinese entrepreneurs were skeptical of the internet and online transactions. Ma’s team worked tirelessly to prove that a digital marketplace could work. To solve the trust gap in payments, they created Alipay in 2004, which held money in escrow until buyers were satisfied with their goods.
Defeating Giants and Making History
Ma’s greatest test came in 2003 with the launch of Taobao, which went head-to-head with the global giant eBay. While eBay charged fees, Ma made Taobao free for sellers. His understanding of the local market and “never give up” attitude eventually forced eBay to exit China in 2006.
The ultimate validation came in 2014, when Alibaba went public on the New York Stock Exchange. It was the largest IPO in history at the time, raising a staggering $25 billion.
The Jack Ma Philosophy: “The Day After Tomorrow”
Today, Jack Ma is a global symbol of persistence. He stepped down as chairman in 2019 to focus on philanthropy and education through the Jack Ma Foundation.

His life is defined by one core belief that continues to inspire millions:
“Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.”
Jack Ma’s story reminds us that failure isn’t the opposite of success — it’s the path to it. If you can get used to being “hit” like a boxer and keep moving forward, the “sunshine” will eventually find you.
