IWD: NAWOJ Deputy National Chairperson, Chief Dr Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu Leads Conversation on Women Supporting Women.

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Deputy National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Chief Dr. Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu, has called on women to deliberately support and uplift one another as a pathway to achieving inclusive and sustainable development.
Okonkwo-Ogabu made the call while leading a conversation at a dialogue organised by Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre to mark the global celebration of women.
She stressed that collective progress among women can only be achieved when women intentionally create opportunities for other women to thrive, mentor younger ones and encourage greater participation in leadership and decision-making.
According to her, many women face structural and societal barriers that hinder their advancement, noting that solidarity among women remains a powerful tool for overcoming such challenges.
Earlier, the Executive Director of Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Dr. Emem Okon, said the event was organised to provide a platform for reflection and dialogue on gender inclusion and empowerment at the community level.

Okon explained that empowering women at the grassroots is critical to building stronger communities, adding that sustainable development can only be achieved when women are actively involved in leadership and decision-making processes.
Also speaking, Comrade Pius Dukor highlighted the need for men to act as allies in the push for gender equality.
He emphasized that men have a responsibility to support women’s leadership and participation in society, noting that gender inclusion requires collaboration between both men and women.
In another presentation, Dr. Ayo Lawrence spoke on the importance of self-care and the well-being of women, especially those engaged in leadership and advocacy roles.
Lawrence reminded participants that empowerment also involves prioritizing mental health, rest and personal development while pursuing social impact.
The event brought together advocates, community leaders and women from different backgrounds who shared experiences and practical strategies for advancing gender equality and building more inclusive communities.

Participants agreed that meaningful progress will be achieved when women continue to support women, men stand as allies, and communities work together to promote equality and inclusion at all levels.
