Candidiasis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast in your body. Healthy bacteria help balance the amount of yeast and disruption of this balance leads to an infection. Antifungal medications treat candidiasis and clear the infection between two days to two weeks, depending on severity.

Types of Candidiasis

  1. Oral Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis): White patches in the mouth, throat, and tongue. Common in infants, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
  2. Vaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection): Causes itching, burning, and a thick white discharge. More common in women who are pregnant, diabetic, or using antibiotics.
  3. Cutaneous Candidiasis: Affects the skin, especially in warm, moist areas (e.g., armpits, groin, under breasts).
  4. Invasive Candidiasis: A severe, life-threatening condition where Candida enters the bloodstream and spreads to organs. Common in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients.

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Weak immune system (HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, diabetes)
  • Antibiotic or steroid use.
  • High blood sugar levels.
  • Poor hygiene or prolonged moisture exposure..
  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes..

Symptoms

  • White patches (mouth/throat).
  • Itching, redness, and discharge (vagina)..
  • Rash and skin irritation (skin folds).
  • Fever and chills (invasive form).

Diagnosis and Tests

How is candidiasis diagnosed?

Your healthcare provider will diagnose candidiasis after a physical examination of the affected area. They will also ask you questions about your symptoms, including the severity of your symptoms and how long you’ve experienced them. Your healthcare provider will also test the infection to identify the type of yeast that is overgrown, which better determines your treatment options.

What tests help diagnose candidiasis?

Your healthcare provider will test the infection to determine the best treatment plan to combat the overgrowth of yeast. A culture test identifies the type of yeast and bacteria in your infection. For this test, your healthcare provider will swab the infected area with sterile cotton, then examine the sample under a microscope.

Treatment:

  • Topical Antifungals: Clotrimazole, miconazole for skin and vaginal infections.
  • Oral Antifungals: Fluconazole for more severe cases.
  • IV Antifungals: For invasive candidiasis.

Prevention:

  • Maintain good hygiene and keep skin dry.
  • Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.
  • Control blood sugar levels in diabetes.
  • Wear breathable clothing to prevent moisture buildup.

Termitomyces mushroom extract-mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles and its in-vitro activity against drug-resistant Candida species:

The use of edible and medicinal mushrooms as unique tools for the mycosynthesis of AgNPs has continued to attract the attention of researchers owing to its considerable amount of bioactive compounds. This study successfully employed an aqueous extract of Termitomyces mushroom as a reducing, capping, and stabilization agent to synthesize AgNPs. Using a range of techniques, the characteristics of the mycosynthesized AgNPs were thoroughly examined. The AgNPs were spherical, uniform, crystal structure, and a size range of 28 to 45 nm. The potential biomedical application of the AgNPs against drug-resistant Candida species revealed outstanding efficacy in comparison to standard antifungal drugs. The inhibitory actions occurring through the alteration of the integrity of the cell membrane may have been enhanced by the capping biomolecules. Overall, data from this study disclosed that Termitomyces mushroom-mediated AgNPs can be considered as a possible novel therapeutic agent for effective treatment and management of drug-resistant fungal pathogens (specifically resistant Candida strains). Nevertheless, more investigations are required to ascertain the mechanistic actions, accurate formulations, and safety status of these Ag-nanosize materials in human cells for future applications in biomedical fields.
