From Doha to Hanoi: A journey of discovery and growth.

Happy New Year!

I’ve missed writing so much, but I really needed a break to reset and recharge.

Strangely enough, this year doesn’t quite feel like a new one yet. Maybe it’s because, for the first time, I didn’t cross over in church, online, or with something spiritual. It feels more like a continuation rather than a fresh start.

As the year begins, I’ve been reflecting on the extraordinary journey that brought me to this moment — sharing my story with the world.

On December 27, 2024, I embarked on an adventure, exploring two incredible countries, Qatar and Vietnam. Both offered unique and transformative experiences that shaped me personally and as a writer, especially as I prepare for the launch of my book, What Love Left Unfinished.

For most of last year, I dreamed of traveling to two new countries. My ideal destinations were Qatar and Singapore — if you’ve been reading my stories, you’d know my obsession with Singapore! Unfortunately, Singapore’s expenses put it out of reach for now, so I decided on Vietnam instead.

I initially planned to travel with friends, but adult responsibilities meant everyone had different priorities. Determined not to let this hold me back, I took a leap of faith and joined a group I found on X (formerly Twitter), called The Creatives Island. Their trip itinerary matched my leave schedule, and they were visiting two countries — it felt like fate! After discussing it with my colleague, Amara who sits besides me and was by my side when I saw the package and my sister (both of whom cheered me on), I made the deposit. It was scary venturing out alone, but my sister’s words, “Esther, just go for it,” gave me courage.

And I’m so glad I did! Traveling solo with strangers turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life — a gift to myself for making it through the year and for writing a whole book!

I spent 6 nights in Qatar and 4 nights in Vietnam, and both were absolutely incredible.

Qatar:

I arrived at Doha International Airport on December 28. The smooth flight and surprisingly delicious in-flight meal (noodles with shredded beef sauce!) set the tone. When we reached our luxurious hotel, I couldn’t believe this was part of our package. From the breathtaking views to the stunning poolside scenery, everything was magical.

One of the most surprising moments for me in Qatar was the toilets! I was so shocked the first time I used one — they flush automatically when you enter and again when you’re done. It was both fascinating and a little unnerving at first, but I quickly got used to it.

Highlights of Qatar were:

Souq Waqif: A traditional market bursting with Qatari culture. I learned the art of bargaining here!

The National Library: A must-see architectural wonder and a haven for book lovers.

Villaggio Mall: Beyond its luxury stores, the Venetian-style canal and gondola rides were unforgettable.

Desert Safari: Dune bashing was exhilarating and gave me a new appreciation for the beauty of the desert. Very scary but worth it!

Vietnam:

Vietnam left me speechless. The warmth of the people, the affordability, and the sense of adventure were unmatched. A few moments stood out to me:

How welcoming everyone was, especially as a Black traveler — We felt like celebrities with all the photo requests!

Visiting the preserved body of Vietnam’s national hero, Ho Chi Minh. Seeing his 65-year-old, impeccably preserved body was surreal.

The 2-day, 1-night cruise was an experience of a lifetime. The serene beauty of the waters and landscapes took my breath away.

This journey reminded me of the power of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the unknown and I’m so glad I took that step!

I cannot categorically put my experience in words because it is one of those things you just have to experience yourself. I mean I would leave you with pictures at the end but even the pictures do not do justice.

We were on a cruise for 2 days and it was just perfect!

Another moment I cannot put in words! This experience was everything and more!
