REVIEW: Why “Illegal Touching” Hit Me So Hard: Ian, Noah, and the Love They Both Needed

Sincerity, sacrifice, and tenderness. Impulsiveness, jealousy, and anger.

The vertical BL drama Illegal Touching is driven by the intense emotions of its two main characters, Ian and Noah.

Of course, we all understand that this drama was created with AI, and there are still plenty of continuity issues from one shot to the next. The most glaring inconsistencies involve the physical spaces around the characters: rooms suddenly change size, doors move to different walls or change color, and somehow the second floor eventually turns into the first.

And dear God, the characters’ constantly changing voices…

O mighty gods of AI, please cure your creations of this plague and allow these poor characters to keep the same voice from beginning to end.

So, what about the story?

The plot itself is not exactly groundbreaking. It has everything you would expect from a vertical BL drama: sports, enemies-to-lovers, jealousy, misunderstandings, sacrifice, and so on.

However, there is something that makes this story feel more thoughtful than it initially appears.

Neither Ian nor Noah comes from a wealthy or privileged background. Both of them have had to fight their own way toward their goals. The supporting cast also creates an interesting balance between people who genuinely care about them — such as Ian’s brother, the coaches, and Noah’s teammates — and characters like Brittany and Wilson, whose actions cause Ian enormous pain and inevitably hurt Noah as well.

The drama also touches on the uncomfortable reality that being gay is still not entirely safe, even in a society that considers itself open-minded. Same-sex relationships are still treated as unacceptable in many conservative families and communities.

I am not going to retell the entire plot, because I would rather encourage people to watch the series themselves. Instead, I want to talk about the details that made my heart beat along with Ian and Noah’s.

And yes, I realize that by writing about this, I am revealing a small piece of myself. The stories that affect us most deeply often reflect something within us — something we recognize, something we have experienced, or something we secretly long for.

Ian: the quiet strategist

Ian absolutely amazed me with his patience.

He had been writing about Noah in his diary for a long time, and he deliberately became the team’s medical professional partly so he could remain close to the guy he liked.

My sweet Ian, you are one quiet strategist. You moved toward your goal slowly, patiently, and with incredible determination.

Even after he and Noah were forced apart, Ian moved to another city for work and ended up closer to him again. Although, to be fair, Ian’s brother Liam also lives and works in that cold northern city, so maybe it really was just a coincidence.

Ian is quiet and restrained on the outside, but I believe he is deeply sensitive underneath.

At first glance, he may seem physically or emotionally weak. But seriously — let us remember a few things.

Who fought Noah and actually managed to injure him?

Who can push Noah to the absolute breaking point with nothing but a few calm words?

And who managed to catch the attention of a supposedly straight guy, make him jealous, and eventually make him fall completely in love?

Ian did all of that without sexually harassing Noah, forcing himself on him, or deliberately manipulating him into questioning his sexuality.

Ian was simply honest with Noah and did his job as a medical professional. He surrounded Noah with quiet, unobtrusive care.

Of course, we all understand that Ian enjoyed taking care of him. Being close to Noah and feeling useful to him was probably Ian’s greatest source of happiness.

Ian does not conquer people through force. He becomes indispensable by being attentive, loyal, and genuinely present.

Noah: bold, impulsive, and completely unapologetic

Oh, Noah.

Impulsive, determined, and completely unconcerned with what anyone else thinks.

I do not think Noah expected any of this to happen to him. Yet, surprisingly, he accepted his feelings relatively quickly. He accepted that he was attracted to Ian, stopped fighting himself, and eventually became willing to acknowledge their relationship publicly without shame.

This reveals Noah’s strong sense of self.

He knows he is the best player. He knows what he wants. And when it comes to choosing his partner, Noah treats it as his decision and his alone.

In Noah’s mind, the world will have to adjust to him — not the other way around.

One detail I find especially interesting is that nearly all of the physical contact between them is initiated by Noah.

It is Noah who pins Ian against the lockers in a burst of anger.

It is Noah who feels the urge to touch Ian during their first medical examination.

It is Noah who presses close to Ian while they are taking a picture at the amusement park.

It is Noah who embraces Ian during his panic attack.

And it is Noah who initiates their first kiss.

What makes this especially meaningful is that Noah was not unconscious, delirious, or completely out of control during those moments. He made those choices deliberately.

His body seemed to understand what he wanted long before his mind was ready to admit it.

Why do Ian and Noah work so well together?

Because each of them finds something essential in the other.

Noah is built to protect, provide, pursue, and conquer. In return, he needs attention, loyalty, reassurance, and care.

Ian is built to care, remain loyal, notice the smallest details, and devote himself to the person he loves. In return, he wants to feel protected, pursued, chosen, and accepted.

Ian gives Noah the tenderness and devotion he has always needed.

Noah gives Ian the safety and unconditional acceptance he has never truly had.

They are not simply opposites. Their emotional needs fit together almost perfectly.

The moments that affected me most

The most emotional scenes for me were the ones in which Noah finally got to fulfill his instinctive need to protect Ian.

The first was in the haunted house at the amusement park, when Ian became frightened and instinctively threw himself into Noah’s arms.

For Noah, that moment must have been incredibly important. Ian, who normally keeps everyone at a distance, suddenly turned to him for safety.

The second was during Ian’s panic attack. Noah took off his hoodie, wrapped Ian in it, held him tightly, and allowed Ian to cling to him until the attack passed.

He did not demand explanations. He did not make the moment about himself. He simply became a safe place for Ian.

The third — and by far the most devastating — was when Noah overcame his own fear and saved Ian from Wilson’s assault.

Ian was completely exhausted and hysterical. He broke down crying and threw his arms around Noah’s neck.

That scene was incredibly powerful.

It felt as though Ian was finally releasing all the humiliation, pain, fear, and suffering he had been carrying for years. His breakdown was not only about what Wilson had just done. It was everything — Ian’s family rejecting him, the coercion, the shame, the loneliness, and the belief that no one would ever truly protect him.

And then Noah came.

For once, Ian did not have to save himself.

I do have one bone to pick with the AI, though: the sound of Ian crying was bizarrely similar to laughter. But even with that flaw, I think the emotional meaning of the scene came through clearly.

Ian was finally allowing himself to collapse because, for the first time, someone was there to catch him.

I have just realized that if I describe every scene that made me feel something, this post will easily turn into several more pages.
