Why Are Screen Space Reflections Unique?

Reflections play a huge role in visual realism, and in Unity, Reflection Probes are one of the core tools that make reflective surfaces believable. They work by capturing a spherical view of the environment and storing it as a Cubemap, which reflective materials use to simulate accurate reflections.

Setting up a Reflection Probe is simple: add the component, position it correctly, and define its Bounding Volume. Any object inside this volume will sample reflections from that probe. Unity supports three main modes: Baked for static scenes, Custom for manually assigned cubemaps, and Realtime for dynamic environments — powerful, but expensive.

Optimization is critical. You can avoid self-reflection artifacts by excluding objects via the Culling Mask, and control realtime updates using refresh modes like On Awake, Every Frame, or Via Scripting. Time Slicing helps distribute the cost of updates across multiple frames.

Advanced features like Blending and Box Projection ensure smooth transitions and more accurate reflections in complex spaces.

Used wisely, Reflection Probes deliver realistic reflections while keeping performance under control — especially when combined strategically with other reflection techniques.
