Moving the Family to Gator Country

“For the hundredth time, alligators don’t make good pets!!”

We were on the last leg of our move to the swampland of southernmost Louisiana when the enormity of our undertaking overwhelmed me. I pulled over and turned off the engine.

Eventually, I noticed my surroundings… murky water, dragonflies, turtles, and an egret high-stepping through tall grass, grazing the water’s surface with a long bill.

We relaxed watching, until an alligator surged from the brackish water, grabbing the snowy white in massive wide-open jaws before diving deep.

A small voice whispered from the backseat, “I don’t want an alligator anymore.”
