With the recent rise in vehicle-versus-human deaths, permanent injuries, and the long tail of financial and personal cost, this is not an isolated story. It’s part of a pattern: dangerous driving leading to life-altering consequences for victims, and too often, limited consequences for those responsible.
A longer piece will examine this pattern more closely, including cases in which drivers flee while the victim remains in contact with the vehicle. While unrelated, another story with an attempted fleeing vehicle in the SF Standard paints a gruesome picture of what can happen when a driver fails to stop after impact. Please stay tuned for more details — and if you are involved in a crash and a human is entangled with your vehicle, stop and call emergency services. On quiet roads where a person may not be found in a timely fashion, the consequences of not calling emergency responders immediately only increase.

About the victim
Details are limited as the case and recovery are ongoing. What follows is factual and documented.
Injuries and medical impact
The victim sustained nine fractures, severe internal thoracic bleeding, a concussion, a punctured lung, deep lacerations, a hematoma, whiplash with ongoing shoulder and neck pain, and extensive soft tissue damage, including abrasions down to the bone.
All hospitalizations were for life-threatening conditions. Initial treatment took place at Highland Level One Trauma Center, followed by ongoing care through Kaiser, including two additional hospitalizations due to complications.
Those complications included a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the affected arm, requiring continued monitoring and treatment. Rib and shoulder fractures continue to limit mobility and cause significant pain. Recovery also includes post-concussive care and treatment for severe blood loss.
The financial impact is substantial. Health insurance has paid over $325,000 to date. The victim has incurred more than $30,000 in out-of-pocket costs for treatment and recovery. At the time of publishing, none of these costs have been recovered.
A note of gratitude from the victim
“While the incident revealed the worst in one person, it also revealed the best in others.
Bystanders stayed, stabilized the situation, coordinated with police and emergency services, and fielded calls from family triggered by the impact alert. They ensured the victim did not move until EMTs arrived to secure the neck and spine.
That response saved me.”
