Why Share Your Knowledge?

A year ago, during one of our sharing sessions in my previous company, one of the leaders shared a quote that dawned on me.

“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” — James Keller

He continued to elaborate on that quote saying when you share your knowledge and teach someone else what you know, it does not in any way affect your own light but it gives light to the other person’s candle. We are in a transition era where there are still some people who does not want to share their knowledge and gatekeeping information thinking it will give them an upper-hand at work and in life in general.

In this modern era, we are slowly moving away from the old-school thinking and it is very important that we empower and encourage sharing knowledge, information, techniques, and life hacks.

I personally love teaching. I am not in the academic field but there are a lot of ways to teach and sharing what you know. I am an advocate of continuous improvement and life-long learning. I just love the saying “we learn new things everyday”. At work, I make sure I don’t gatekeep knowledge and skills that I know will help that other person and eventually the whole organization. Helping each other grow at work is so underrated. Yes, competition is inevitable but it also does not mean stunting one’s growth just so you can get all the credit and be the ‘most deserving’.

In life, sharing personal experiences to your friends is therapeutic and at the same time you will have a joint analysis and realizations of one or the other’s life experience. You can all learn from other’s experience as you also navigate your own life.

Sharing Life Experiences on Friday Nights

The quote above is really a reflection on how I have been living my life and how I want to continue living it. Another favorite quote of mine is:

“You are where you are because of who you are”

You simply cannot fake being genuine. If you are a person who is not secure of herself, it radiates through the energy you give others. A secured person open-heartedly shares herself with others. Always remember even Cocomelon sings “Sharing is caring.”.
