Ask Candid Candace: Caught a shoplifter in the act, do you get involved?

Dear Candid Candace: I ran into this somewhat sticky situation a few weeks ago. While shopping in a drugstore, I saw somebody take some products off the shelves and put them in their backpack. While I couldn’t be completely positive, it sure looked like a clear case of shoplifting. I looked around and no one else seemed to notice. I know shoplifting has been a big problem of late, but the quandary is thus: Do I mind my own business and not create controversy and disruption? Or do I say something to employees and point out the person? Your thoughts? Signed- The Watchful Eye

Dear Watchful Eye: Absolutely point out the person to an employee/manager. The sad part is, that in most cases the employees’ hands are tied (anything under $950 is classified as a misdemeanor and not a felony- so many criminals don’t mind chancing it) OR they don’t want to become involved, which of course is understandable too. It’s infuriating to watch any theft knowing how hard so many people work to do the right thing and PAY for their goods. However, be sure not to confront the person yourself; it’s not worth risking your safety. Quietly alert a manager or employee and, hopefully, they will handle it and that person will pay a price.

Dear Candid Candace: Here is kind of an obscure question for you, but it comes up a lot it seems especially this summer and early fall with lots of visitors to our city. I see people and groups looking at their phones, tapping away and appearing to be confused as far as directions or locations. While never completely positive, you can almost always tell they are visitors trying to find their way around the city. My tendency is to go up to them and ask if they need any help, or something like, “are you guys looking for something”? Most of the time they seem appreciative, and I can be of help — but I also know in this day and age, others may say that could be an unwanted invasion of privacy. I need some “ Candid” thoughts on this. Signed- Trying To Be helpful

Dear Trying To Be Helpful: My first instinct is always to approach anyone who looks lost or confused on our city streets and ask if they need help. I’ve been in similar situations while traveling abroad and never forgot how much the kindness of strangers meant to me. Although it’s true, some people don’t really want help (men drivers are a case in point, LOL) but I think being a good neighbor trumps ignoring a situation where someone appears in need. Keep doing YOU “Trying To Be Helpful”- I think your instincts are spot on!
