Football Will NOT Be the Same — And Neither Will Leadership

This time of year, the football world is loud.

Coaching decisions. Leadership changes. Quiet exits that speak louder than press conferences.

For most people, it’s entertainment.

For me, football is something else entirely.

It’s the engine behind my business.

At the professional and college levels today, almost everything is transactional.

People get paid. Roles are defined. Performance matters.

But transactional leadership alone produces:

• Low trust
• Short-term thinking

The strongest organizations operate on both transaction and passion.

That balance is where culture lives.

That’s where leadership either works — or collapses.

This is why Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh stand out.

Growing up in Maryland, football wasn’t just something I watched — it shaped who I became.

I played it. I studied it. I coached it. I scouted it.

I had more Ray Lewis memorabilia on my wall than posters of musicians or celebrities.

It was Coach Harbaugh who coached Ray Lewis’s final game — the Super Bowl — a moment that symbolized leadership done right: preparation meeting purpose.

Back in 2008, as a college sophomore, I watched Mike Tomlin win his Super Bowl against the Cardinals during the same season Barack Obama was elected.

Those moments mattered. They still do.

A Signal Worth Paying Attention To

Just a week ago, I publicly said I was pulling for Coach Tomlin.

Then leadership shifted again.

No matter how you interpret the situation, the takeaway is clear:

Football is changing. Leadership is changing. And business owners need better models.

Not louder ones. Not trendier ones.

Better ones.
