Enough Is Enough: India’s Students Deserve Justice, Not Batons

The NEET-UG 2026 paper leak has become one of the darkest chapters in India’s education system. It was not merely a leaked examination paper. It was the collapse of trust in an institution that millions of students believed would judge them fairly.

Every year, students sacrifice their childhood, sleep, mental health, and precious years preparing for one examination. Families spend their life savings on coaching, books, and hostel fees with the hope that hard work will be rewarded. When a paper is leaked, that hope is shattered.

Instead of receiving reassurance, thousands of students who came to Jantar Mantar seeking justice were met with barricades, detentions, and lathi charges. Videos circulating from the protests show students being pushed, dragged, and beaten as police dispersed demonstrators. Reports from protesters and student organizations have also alleged that some female students were manhandled and treated disrespectfully during the police action. These allegations deserve an independent, transparent investigation, and if any misconduct occurred, those responsible must be held accountable.

This raises a painful question: Is this how a democracy responds to its youth?

Students are not criminals. They are the future doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers, and civil servants of this country. They came asking for accountability, not violence. Their voices deserved dialogue, not force.

The controversy has also left behind stories of unimaginable pain. Families have spoken about the emotional toll the scandal has taken, and there have been reports of students who died by suicide amid the crisis. Every such loss is heartbreaking. Their families deserve compassion, a fair investigation into every aspect of the scandal, and assurance that no future student will have to suffer because of failures in the examination system.

With such a massive failure occurring under the Ministry of Education, serious questions naturally arise about leadership and accountability. Many students, teachers, parents, and opposition leaders have demanded that the Union Education Minister resign and accept moral responsibility. In any democracy, when an institution entrusted with the future of millions fails so profoundly, accountability should begin at the highest level. Leadership is not only about taking credit when things go well; it is also about accepting responsibility when they do not.

Students are asking: What was our fault? Will Prime Minister Modi answer?

Justice for students cannot stop with arrests of a few individuals. Justice means identifying everyone involved in the paper leak, ensuring transparent investigations, reforming the examination system, protecting whistleblowers, respecting peaceful protesters, and restoring public faith in India’s education system.

The Constitution gives every citizen the right to express dissent peacefully. Protecting that right is not a sign of weakness. It is the strength of a democracy.

India’s youth have carried this nation with their dreams, dedication, and determination. They deserve an education system that rewards honesty, not corruption. They deserve leaders who listen instead of silence them. They deserve respect instead of fear.

The demand is simple:

Justice for every student whose future was stolen.

Justice for every family whose hopes were shattered.

Justice for those who lost their lives during this tragedy.

And accountability from every public official responsible for ensuring that such a failure never happens again.

A nation cannot build a brighter future by ignoring the voices of the very generation that will create it.
