I am in the moment; the moment is God.

I, with a few others, met at the Faithful Companions of Jesus Spirituality and Ecojustice Centre in Somerstown, London. We Zoomed in as a group to the National Assembly of Christian Life Community (CLC) England and Wales.

During a plenary, the question asked was, “What are the wellsprings of hope in your life?”

I remained silent until a movement came that could be expressed in words.

The movement was fresh, although the words were familiar.

I recognised the movement; it whispered what I know.

Once again, the words told the story. Around 26 years ago, upon having the confirmation of the pregnancy of my daughter, it felt like I had been given a job that I did not feel skilled for. Initially, I got anxious and fearful. If I were to fulfil the demands of being a father, I had to find a way to live. In time, the mantra that I now live by came: “The only thing required of you is this present moment.”

I heard a different word in the telling, ‘perpetual.’ This hope is perpetual for it is ever present. In a way, it does not feel like hope, as hope is often future-focused. But maybe hope is in the perpetual. Actually, it feels like the whole universe is in perpetual motion, and everything that I need is right here. I am in the moment; the moment is God and God is the moment.
