The Benefits of Hydration Therapy
Intravenous (IV) hydration therapy has become increasingly popular in recent years and widely supported by medical professionals, athletes, and health enthusiasts turning to it as a way to boost their overall health and wellbeing. Medium had an opportunity to sit down with Sarah Cimikoski, Owner of The Re/Clinic in Sandy Utah, who shared some insight on the benefits of IV therapy and its growing demand.

The origins of IV therapy can be traced back to the mid-1600s, when blood transfusions were first attempted. However, it wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that IV therapy was used for the purpose of rehydration. In 1831, Dr. Thomas Latta, a Scottish physician, introduced the concept of IV therapy as a treatment for cholera. He used a saline solution intravenously to replace fluids lost in patients due to diarrhea and vomiting, an often deadly and common symptom of cholera.
Over the next few decades, IV therapy began to gain acceptance as a medical treatment. During World War I, IV therapy was used to treat soldiers suffering from dehydration, and in the 1920s, it became the standard treatment for patients with severe burns.
It wasn’t until the development of bottled liquids and application methods of tubing in the 1950’s that made IV therapy more accessible and easier to administer.
This led to the widespread use of IV therapy in hospitals and medical facilities around the world. In the 70s, IV therapy became the norm to administer medications, as well as fluids and nutrients with the latter process carving out a billion-dollar niche industry of non-medical wellness centers.

Actor Brando Eaton (Dexter, American Horror Story), one of many celebrities who regularly patronize the Reclinic and has included IV therapy to his regular workout routine “Hydration Therapy helps me recover quicker between workouts.” Eaton said. “You can go from exhausted, to feeling worn down and fatigued and then when you get hydration, vitamins flowing through your actual veins instead of trying to take them through capsules, it brings you back (to life) fast.”
It isn’t just the health conscience who have adopted IV therapy into their weekly routine, several surveys list IV therapy having significantly reduced recover time when experiencing a “hangover”, others reporting better sleep and more energy. “I have seen the difference IV therapy has made in our clients.” Sarah Said. “It is one of the fastest ways to get vitamins into your system.”
IV hydration therapy has a long and fascinating history. From its origins as a treatment for cholera to its widespread use in hospitals and wellness centers today, IV therapy has come a long way. While its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, the debate over its benefits will continue.
