Hi friends,
For years I had a very specific idea about where I needed to study.
There was one desk, one lamp, one setup that felt right. Studying anywhere else felt less serious, less productive — like I wasn’t quite in the mode. I spent real effort protecting my access to that specific desk at specific times, and I felt genuinely frustrated on nights when I had to study elsewhere.
The research suggests I had this exactly backwards.
Varying your study context — the physical environment, the time of day, the conditions around you — produces better long-term retention than optimising for a single ideal setting. Not because discomfort is inherently good, but because of how memory encodes contextual information alongside content.

Why context gets encoded with content
When you learn something, your brain doesn’t just store the information itself. It also encodes the context around it — the physical environment, your physical state, the sensory details of where you were. This contextual information gets attached to the memory trace as a retrieval cue.
When you return to the same context, those cues help trigger the memory. This is why you can sometimes remember something when you’re back in the room where you learned it that you couldn’t recall elsewhere. The context is a retrieval aid.
The problem is that if you always study in the same environment, your memory becomes partly dependent on that environment for retrieval. You’ve encoded the material with a single set of contextual cues. In an exam room — a completely different environment — those cues are absent.
Varying your study context fixes this by multiplying the contextual cues attached to the same material. Information studied in multiple environments gets retrieved through multiple pathways. It becomes less dependent on any single context for recall.
The specific research finding
A classic study by Smith, Glenberg, and Bjork in 1978 had students learn a list of words in one room, then tested them in either the same room or a different one. Students tested in the same room significantly outperformed those tested in a different room.
The follow-up finding was more interesting. Students who studied the same material in two different rooms — and were then tested in either room — performed significantly better than students who studied in the same room twice. Variation during study was worth more than consistency.
This effect isn’t limited to physical environment. Studying the same material in the morning on one day and the evening on another, or in different physical postures, or in different kinds of noise conditions, all contribute to building a more context-independent memory that retrieves more reliably under varied conditions.
What this means practically
The practical implication is not that you should study in chaotic or distracting conditions — there is a real cost to trying to focus in environments that prevent focus. It’s that the ideal study environment doesn’t need to be the same environment every time.
Studying on the train is not less valuable than studying at your desk, assuming you can actually concentrate. Reviewing notes in a hospital corridor between patients is not wasted effort. The variety itself is contributing to retention, not detracting from it.
The bigger shift is the one away from optimising conditions before starting. Many students spend significant energy trying to create the perfect environment — the right desk, the right lighting, the right silence — and use the absence of those conditions as a reason not to study. The research suggests those conditions matter less than we’ve been led to believe, and that varying them actively benefits retention.

Why it works: Varying the context of retrieval practice builds what researchers call interconnected networks of knowledge — multiple retrieval pathways to the same information. Knowledge that’s been retrieved in varied contexts transfers more reliably to new situations than knowledge practised only in its original form.
The honest version
I still have a preferred desk. I still study better there than in most other places, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a productive setup you return to.
What changed is that I stopped treating other environments as inferior and started using them. The twenty minutes on the train reviewing something I studied yesterday are not second-rate study time. Given what I know about context encoding and retrieval, they might be some of the most valuable minutes in my week.
The perfect study session in the perfect environment, practised consistently in exactly that environment, produces more context-dependent memories than the varied sessions you actually manage to do. Some of both is probably the right answer.
