Leaving What Left Me First

I learned to leave without a sound, no slamming doors, no turning around, just quiet steps that fade away like all the words I couldn’t say.

I used to stay, God, I would stay, bend till I’d break, then still I’d stay, watering people, bone-dry ground, begging for love that’s never found.

The “older sister,” stitched in place, a second mother they’d replace, the one who gives, who understands, who holds the world in shaking hands.

The “best friend” always on call, midnight tears, I caught them all, I showed up fast, I stayed up late, they showed up… when it was convenient.

And oh, that line I knew too well: “she’ll understand,” they’d always tell. Of course she will, she always does, she’ll shrink herself, because… because-

because she’s soft, because she bends, because she breaks and still pretends, because her heart won’t draw a line, because her pain is never mine.

They called it love, I called it theft, taking all I had till nothing’s left, HANDS THAT HELP BUT WERE NEVER HELD,

a story no one ever spelled.

Even my silence played its part, a resting place for every heart, their guilt dissolved inside my chest, while I learned how to need less.

I folded pain in careful creases, made myself in smaller pieces, an origami kind of ache no one bothered to remake.

And God , it hurts, I was so good, everything they knew I would, so easy to lean on, use, depend… but never once to defend.

But something in me snapped awake, not loud, not wild, but it did break, a quiet shift, a final line: what if this life was finally mine?

So hear me now, no soft excuse, no gentle girl you get to use, no “yes, of course,” no silent plea, not this time. Not from me.

This time I’m selfish. Let it sting. I won’t be everyone’s everything. Let them whisper, let them blame, I’m done playing that holy game.

I leave like tides that won’t come back, like love that slipped between the cracks, like every time I gave too much and got nothing close to touch.

Let them wonder, let them see what life looks like without me no late-night calls, no steady light, no girl who stayed and made it right.

I’m still her, just not that kind, not the one they left behind, not the one who’d bleed to prove she deserved a drop of love.

I’m still here, aching, yes, but free… just finally choosing me.
