The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), named after a math mistake causing division by 0, has been observing the accretion disk (another physical model/math mistake) of M87, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy M87, for several years. This animation demonstrates observed changes in the brightness and size of the M87 “accretion disk”:

In the story subtitle, you can see the mainstream explanation for that effect. But what is it really, and why does it occur?
In my previous article,
we discussed how dense stars (Suns)

appear to us (due to two optical effects, refraction and redshift, which in this case arise from time dilation alone):

The case of M87* is simpler: because it spins slowly, like our Sun, so, it remains more spherical,

through the same two optical effects, it appears similar to the Sun’s corona during a solar eclipse:

Every star is fundamentally similar to our Sun, with activity cycles that drive changes in its photosphere and corona, as well as variations in size and brightness.
