BYD: The Company That Prepared for the Future Before It Was Obvious

Most companies wait for the future to become clear. BYD didn’t.

Long before electric vehicles became a global conversation, BYD was focused on batteries. It built its business supplying rechargeable batteries for phones and electronics — an unexciting space, but one that gave it deep expertise in energy. At the time, this didn’t look like a move into the future of cars. But that’s exactly what it became.

In 2003, BYD entered the auto industry by acquiring a struggling car manufacturer. The acquisition was initially hated by investors. When BYD announced they were buying the company, their stock plummeted by 20% in a single day because the market couldn’t see how a “battery company” could possibly build cars. History, clearly, proved them wrong.

If cars were going to run on electricity, then understanding batteries wasn’t just useful — it was foundational. BYD wasn’t starting from scratch; it was building on what it already knew.

The turning point came in 2008. Warren Buffett, through Berkshire Hathaway, invested $230 million in BYD. The decision was heavily influenced by Charlie Munger, who saw something rare in the founder, Wang Chuanfu. At a time when electric vehicles were still uncertain, the bet wasn’t just on the market, it was on the person building for it.

While the world debated whether electric vehicles would succeed, BYD focused on execution. It improved its battery technology, built strong manufacturing capabilities, and controlled key parts of its supply chain. So when demand eventually grew, BYD wasn’t trying to catch up. It was already prepared.

Today, BYD is often mentioned alongside Tesla. They took different paths: Tesla focused on innovation and brand, while BYD focused on scale and efficiency, but both helped push electric vehicles into the mainstream.

The lesson is simple. Big shifts rarely happen suddenly. They are built quietly over time.

BYD didn’t wait for the future to arrive. It built for it early, and that made all the difference.
