Planting More Trees Won’t Stop Deforestation

Munduruku people of the Amazon and the Waswanipi Cree of Northern Quebec have worked tirelessly to protect their ancestral lands, often achieving greater conservation success than governments or corporations.

Ultimately, reducing deforestation requires action from industries and policymakers. Companies that rely on timber, paper, and other forest products must hold their suppliers accountable and adopt sustainable practices. As education and business increasingly move online, society also has opportunities to reduce its dependence on paper and other resource-intensive materials.

Most importantly, environmental protection has become a political issue. Government policies shape everything from conservation efforts to energy production. For example, many environmental advocates criticized the Biden administration’s approval of Project Willow, arguing that it prioritized economic interests over long-term environmental concerns. Decisions like these highlight the importance of electing leaders who are willing to place environmental sustainability alongside economic growth.

Protecting nature is no longer just an environmental responsibility — it is a matter of protecting human well-being and future generations. Planting trees is valuable, but it is not a complete solution. Preventing deforestation requires stronger policies, corporate accountability, support for Indigenous land stewardship, and a collective commitment to preserving the ecosystems that remain.

The longer we wait, the fewer opportunities we will have to reverse the damage. The responsibility falls not only on governments and corporations but also on citizens who are willing to demand change. If we fail to act now, future generations will inherit the consequences of our inaction.

Because if we do not protect our planet, who will?
