U.S. Ryder Cup Team members move from Silverado Resort in Napa to Bethpage State Park Black Course

The week of Sept. 8–14 was a big one in golf.

The PGA Tour’s Procore Championship, the first event of the FedExCup Fall, was taking place at Napa’s Silverado Resort, with huge crowds on hand to see World №1 Scottie Scheffler and nine other members of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team playing the North Course.

Scheffler put on a winning performance, unleashing a dazzling display of shot-making and scoring, coming from behind each day and winning the Procore Championship, a $6 million event. He posted a 5-under-par 67 in the final round and won by one shot over Ben Griffin.

“The crowds were great. We felt so much support from them,” said Scheffler, who was 19-under-par for the tournament. “There was a lot of noise out there. Our groups were all kind of one part of the golf course out there Thursday and Friday, and there was a ton of people out there. It was really fun to be able to play in front of the crowd. We heard lots of USA chants and lots of good luck wishes for the Ryder Cup.

“As far as Napa goes … it’s a beautiful part of the country. California’s amazing. Every time I come here, I love it so much. We had a great week here at the course as well. Overall, it was very fun.”

It was Scheffler’s sixth win of the season and the 19th victory of his PGA Tour career.

This week is another big one in golf, with Scheffler and the U.S. Team taking on Europe in the 45th Ryder Cup, Sept. 23–28, at the par-70, 7,352-yard Bethpage State Park Black Course, in Farmingdale, New York. It’s a match play format.

A course description, at www.rydercup.com, reads:

“One of the most renowned public golf courses in the United States, Bethpage Black is considered one of the toughest courses in the country, as well, presenting an ultimate test to recreational and world-class golfers alike.”

To prepare and stay game-ready and finely tuned, while also bonding and connecting as a group, the 10 U.S. Ryder Cup players spent the week in Napa, competing at the Procore Championship, spurred on by cheers from the crowds.

“I think as you look back at a couple years ago, a lot of us came in taking four weeks off, and at the end of the day we looked back and said how do we get better? How do we give ourselves a better chance to go out there and compete? I know for myself, I didn’t feel like I was as prepared a couple years ago even though I put a lot of work in those four weeks,” said Collin Morikawa.

“Tournament golf is just different and you have to be able to show up. So, it’s great to have pretty much everyone here this week. A lot of great vibes throughout the meetings and the dinners we’ve had. That’s what you ask for. I think we’re all very close. I mean more than half of these guys on the team I’ve known for over 10 years, so it’s that much more comfortable and I think a lot of us have been fairly close. I think having this little earlier start for us is getting us prepared a little bit more.”

Scheffler and Morikawa played at Silverado, along with Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Ben Griffin, Russell Henley, J.J. Spaun, Justin Thomas and Cameron Young — all members of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team. They were tested and challenged by Silverado’s North Course and its set-up — tight, narrow fairways, long rough, doglegs, bunkering, greens with slope, speed and break.

Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Gary Woodland, U.S. Ryder Cup Vice Captains, were also in the field.

While he was not in the field, Keegan Bradley, the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain and an eight-time PGA Tour winner, was at Silverado to provide support and to be with the team during the week. Bradley could be seen, looking on during a practice round, and also during the tournament.

“This group of players, they’re truly friends and they’re friends off the golf course, which in my teams that I played before this, I don’t know if we exactly had that as much as this group does. They really care about one another,” said Bradley. “And the thing that I’ve noticed that’s most impressive is they really pull for each other and they want each other to do well. These guys, they’re genuinely excited for their friend that wins a tournament and that’s really great.

“We also have a bunch of new guys and it’s been great to see the willingness for our guys to really play with anybody. These guys, put me with anybody, or who do you want to play with, whoever you want. Willing veterans coming to us, saying put us with guys that haven’t played a Ryder Cup, which is really special. It’s a difference maker I think in how you’re going to do it in the Ryder Cup.”

Ryder Cup matches start on Friday, Sept. 26, and continue through the weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28. The U.S. leads the all-time series, 27–15–2.

Team Europe won the Ryder Cup in 2023, at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, in Rome, Italy, 16½–11½.

“I think the more times we’re together, the better. I think this setting is great because it’s outside the bubble of the Ryder Cup where the stress is high and we’re able to see the guys relax and talk to each other,” said Bradley.

Being able to see a practice round that members of the U.S. Ryder Cup team played during Tuesday of the Procore Championship was absolutely amazing — some of the best players in the game at work, the business-like approach that they took, hitting different shots, stepping on the tee and shaping majestic drives around and over historic oak trees, dialing in the pace and speed on the greens.

Given the overall depth of the field and the vast array of talent, it was one of the greatest days for golf in Silverado Resort history.

“I think the Ryder Cup brings out a lot of emotion in people and I think that’s great for our sport. I love it. I love everything about the Ryder Cup. It’s just the passion,” said Bradley.

Bradley had a very good year on the PGA Tour, with a win and six Top-10 finishes. He’s №13 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

He has National Team experience, playing on Ryder Cup Teams in 2012 and 2014 and also Presidents Cup Teams in 2013 and 2024.

Bradley was asked why the Ryder Cup is important to him.

“I think as a kid in sports you always are craving that team atmosphere. With golf, we don’t get that ever. When you’re playing for your country in any sport, it heightens all of that. I think for us, we really only get one time a year to do this. When you’re a part of it, it changes you forever. It changes the way you prepare, it changes the way you set your goals for the year, for your career. In golf, you’re so alone all the time in this process. It’s really such a special feeling to be a part of because it’s so rare,” said Bradley.

It was a big week for Scheffler, as he won the Procore Championship, firing rounds of 70, 68, 64 and 67. It’s his second consecutive season with at least six wins. He also moves into a tie for 40th on the all-time wins list with 19; tied with Ben Crenshaw, Ernie Els, Doug Ford, Hubert Green, Tom Kite and Bill Mehlhorn.

Scheffler’s win at Silverado also comes in his Procore Championship debut. It’s also his first time winning in his debut at an event on Tour and his first professional win in the state of California.

He has finished inside the top 25 in all 20 of his starts this season, with a season-high 17 top-10 finishes (including 15 straight).

Scheffler will lead the U.S. Team into the Ryder Cup.

“The more I’m around Scottie, the more I’m impressed with who he is. I think what’s most impressive about Scottie is just the person that he is. When you see the way he plays golf, you’re amazed, but then when you speak to him and you’re around him and you watch him from afar and you watch him with his family and you see his interaction with the younger players and the caddies, I admire him, I look up to Scottie,” said Bradley.

“He does a lot of things right. Shows up on the golf course, shows up in the team room, and obviously he’ll be a big part of our team at Bethpage.”

Scheffler’s wins include the 2022 and 2024 Masters, 2025 PGA Championship and 2025 Open Championship.

Also, on the U.S. team is Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele.
