Captain Marvel (2019) Movie Review NO SPOILERS: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law

Plot

Set in 1995, the story follows Vers, a member of the Kree elite Starforce who has no memory of her past. During a skirmish with the shape-shifting Skrulls, she crash-lands on Earth (specifically through the roof of a Blockbuster Video).

Vers teams up with a younger, two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Their “buddy-cop” chemistry is the engine of the movie, providing a lighter look at the man who would eventually build the Avengers. Also, it was CRUCIAL that one of the end credit sequences of Avengers: Infinity War was about Captain Marvel. No wonder the movie got so much hype.

But back to the story. As she uncovers her identity as Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force pilot, she realizes the war she’s been fighting isn’t as black-and-white as the Kree led her to believe.

There is a TWIST, but I WILL NOT SPOIL it.

So let’s go to the FINALE. It features Carol fully embracing her humanity and her Tesseract-born powers, leading to a spectacular display of cosmic strength that solidified her as one of the MCU’s heavy hitters.

Review

• Brie Larson’s Performance: Critics are more appreciative of Larson’s “stoic-yet-snarky” portrayal. The “I have nothing to prove to you” moment is still cited as one of the most empowering beats in superhero cinema — a rejection of the “emotional control” the Kree tried to impose on her.
• The De-Aging Tech: Re-watching in 4K today, the digital de-aging of Samuel L. Jackson remains flawless. It was a technical marvel (pun intended) that paved the way for the “resurrections” and “de-aging” we’re seeing in the 2026 film slate.
• The Cat (Goose): Let’s be real — Goose the Flerken stole the show. The reveal of how Fury really lost his eye is still a point of hilarious contention in the 2026 fan community.
• The Flashback Structure: Some argue that the “amnesia” plot makes the first act feel a bit disjointed. By starting the character at her most powerful and working backward, it can be harder for the audience to connect with her early on compared to someone like Steve Rogers. Personally, it DID NOT BOTHER ME as much.

Summary

Captain Marvel is a vibrant exploration of Resilience and Autonomy, arguing that our “flaws” — our emotions, our failures, and our humanity — are actually our greatest strengths. By focusing on a woman who was told her whole life to “keep her emotions in check,” the film serves as a powerful metaphor for breaking free from gaslighting and societal constraints.
